LW & Part 15 Message Board
Authenticated Author Reference

WHAT YOU DON'T NEED TO BE AUTHENTICATED TO DO

1. Posting a plain text message without live links or text formatting. This is available to everyone.

2. Everyone is free to use HTML entities in their posts. These are bits of code that a browser interprets as specific characters you probably don't have on your keyboard, such as Ø (Ø), μ (μ), ° (°), § (§), ¢ (¢), and π (π) --just to name a few. This is also available to everyone right now. We will soon link a chart here with more useful radio and scientific entities, but in the meantime, numerous HTML entity references are searchable online. (Just bear in mind that some of the more exotic Unicode and HTML 5 entities are not yet supported in even the latest browsers.)

3. Simple unnamed BBCode [QUOTE] tags are now available to everyone, too. Just be very sure to include the [/QUOTE] closing tag afterward, or you will be disappointed with the result. Example:

[QUOTE]A snippet of copied text.[/QUOTE]   produces   A snippet of copied text.

4. Preformatted monospace text is available to everyone. If you use the <PRE> and </PRE> tags and type text between them with appropriate line breaks and spaces to form nice columns and rows, that spacing will be preserved. For example:
Typing this into the message box... ...produces this final outcome.
I noticed some signals that sounded like very slow Morse code with odd timing. Then I found this list at LWCA.org:<PRE>
   SOME TIME SIGNALS

40.0    JJY   Tokyo
60.0   WWVB   Ft Collins
77.5  DCF77   Mainflingen
</PRE>I can hear WWVB every day, and the other two most nights.

In the examples of (3) and (4), the [QUOTE] and <PRE> tags are written in upper case for visual clarity, but lower case works fine too.

CURRENT AUTHENTICATED-ONLY FEATURES

The newest features ONLY work when you use your key # password tripcode. I think you'll find them to be tremendously handy, but until we had a way of authenticating users who post here, we couldn't just make them available openly. Spammers would be posting links to questionable products and spreading malware all over the place

Automatic Conversion of URLs to Live Links. This is the simplest to use of all the new features, and one of the most useful. Type or copy-and-paste the full http:// or https:// address of the Web site you want to appear as a link in your post, and the board software will convert it to a live link for you. You do not have to write any HTML tags yourself, but do be sure to include the http:// or https:// portion.

Uploading File Attachments. Sorry, this feature stopped working after GoDaddy allegedly "upgradd our Linux operating system in 2024. We hope to resume uploads in our upcoming forumboard software in 2025.

Simple Text Formatting. You can use basic HTML or the BBCode equivalents for making text bold, underlined, italic, strikethrough, superscript, subscript, centered, etc. A more detailed list will follow at some point.

Feel free to use tags you're familiar with in the meantime. If they're ones which are not supported, nothing adverse will happen. But remember...PLEASE use all the usual text formatting tags in pairs (<b> and </b>, <u> and </u>, etc.). Don't forget to close them, or your text will remain bold, underlined, etc., all the way to the end of your post! Use such formatting sparingly so that it doesn't become tiresome to the reader.

Formatting you CANNOT do at present: changing font faces, sizes, or colors via inline elements; creating tables, DIVs, UL or OL lists, and other block formatting elements. We will gladly entertain suggestions for features to include in future.

Embedding Pictures Stored Elsewhere. If you have server space of your own or a file sharing account somewhere, you can use standard <IMG> or [img] tags in your post to incorporate them into your message. We'll have example code later, but like the other features mentioned here, it's working and available to you right now if you're already familiar with such tags. Note: You cannot use <IMG> tags to point to files on your own computer's local hard drive--it won't work. They must be on a publicly viewable host with an http:// address in order for others to access them. Uploading files to our server is one way to do this.
