You're very right, Ray. (Though "the" Internet does not really exist as an entity in its own right. It's the gazillions of people writing Web sites who forget, misremember, and revise history in this way. And once a mis-impression or outright error makes it onto the 'net, it never seems to go away.)

The experiments you're thinking about were made by Mahlon Loomis. A search for his name in connection with either the word wireless or telegraphy will turn up plenty of results. As of this morning, I discovered that the Wikipedia entry on him is now greatly improved over what it used to be, and provides an excellent starting point.
