The powers-that-be do answer!

Depending on the missile fired, it will either self-detonate when at max range or run into the ground when out of juice.

AIM-9L/M's have a proximity fuse, so when the missile senses it is passing an object (target) it will detonate.

The reason they had some misses, in this case, its that most young fighter pilots are so exited about their first "kill" and actually firing at a "live" target that they often make really rookie targeting mistakes. "Forgot to arm missile before launching it." "Forgot to turn on missile's targeting radar." "Fired canon burst first; launched and shot down missile." "Was watching Top Gun II on the HUD. My bad."

Robert
