Scott,

Lowfer work was pretty much all CW copied by ear until the mid ‘90s. Thanks a lot to Bill DeCarle, VE2IQ, we got PC software that would do Coherent CW, and then BPSK. Slow speed CW came along around the same time, and by the early 2000’s, dot lengths of 3 seconds to as long as 120 seconds became common, all using PC software. A bunch of BPSK and FSK modes followed, most of which were obsoleted by the various “JT” modes. It was all fun, and quite educational.

The current low activity levels are partly due to ever-increasing noise levels, and the attractions of the 630 and 2200 meter ham bands.
