When ITU region 1 implemented 9kHz spacing, the range for broadcasting was set to 153-279 kHz. There were exceptions to this. Radios would tune a bit either side, giving tantalizing glimpses of what lay hidden.

I forget at what age I realised there was a gap between LW and ME on our radios, but this made me very curious about what could be hiding there. Information was scarce! By chance, some family friends gave me an old clock radio (wish I had kept it). It had a very extended "LW" band and covered up to ~400kHz or so IIRC. A new world appeared.
