After having gotten my hands on one of said surplus kits, I quickly found them rather unwieldy and much less portable than I expected. Shucks. You were right on all counts! I ended up going for a pair of 12m Spiderbeams:

They are also light in weight and collapse to a small enough size to make international travel feasible--something that did not cross my mind until after they arrived. I wish I'd gotten these sooner.
