Thanks for the RX report! The tophat has survived another hurricane-force Santa Ana Wind episode last night. I have added a couple radials in your direction last week, so sounds like they're doing the job. Today, I changed ID cycle format, alternating one minute CW and one minute SSB voice-CW mix (you heard the Jingle-Bells tones version).

Modification to ID-cycle for SMV 186.585kHz
Posted by Darwin Long on January 01, 2008 at 21:28:36.
Following suggestions from a couple fellow LOWfers, I have made a modification to the ID cycle for Beacon SMV to allow more time to receive SSB voice during alternate minutes. I have compromised to keep a small amount of CW inserted during these minutes for distant tuning.
The format is one minute of CW ident of "SMV" repeated 13 times, followed by an 8-second dash. The next minute is SSB voice ID repeated six times, with a single CW ident of "SMV" sandwiched between each voice ID. Each minute (at 0.0 and 60.0 seconds) begins with a 5-tone chime (500-625-750-625-1000Hz, as heard at the 187.000 SSB center frequency).
The voice ID is still "This is radiobeacon SMV, Simi Valley, California, U.S.A.", and the voice gender is male-CW-female-CW-male-CW-female-CW-male-CW-female during the minute of SSB voice.
On my beacon, the CW is always sent at 186.585kHz, and the SSB voice has a center listening frequency of 187.000kHz (CW is heard at this frequency as 415Hz tones). I chose to center the SSB at 187.000 purposely so that I can zero-beat my radios to any station transmitting on an even-kilohertz, and then tune the radio to 187.000 to capture the 415-Hz CW tones, which my DSP is notched for (to receive Canadian beacons), and the voice will sound normal. My rigs do have drifting BFO, so this is my preferred method to ensure the signal always sounds the same no matter what the rig's temperature, or where I am.
After four separate visits to Northern California during the past month, I am finding that the skywave propagation for SMV is far superior using a taller vertical and slightly smaller tophat, compared to my previous beacon (DJL) where I used a larger tophat with a shorter vertical. At 300 miles, daytime reception is about S-1 to S-1.5, and at night, skywave mixing causes the strength to fluctuate anywhere between s-0 cancellation to S-7 strong enhancement.
Happy New Year!

Hi John, Re: eton e1 LW performance
Noticing the lack of other reply, I'll give a wack. The Eton line of receivers are likely to be considered for casual listening, ie, AM broadcasts, some short wave, and possibly with the E1, longwave. But only receiving high-powered broadast stations via the tiny built-in antenna. To my understanding most LW dx-ers use more selective/costly receivers and specialized antennas for added signal selectivity performance. But then depends how one defines 'dx.' Check out Universal Radio's Web catalog of examples of performance table top radios as well as this List's technical articles on LW dx-ing.

John,
There is a review on the Canadian Dx site:
http://www.dxer.ca/content/view/51/1/
In summary, the Eton is similar to a Sony 2010 in performance (perhaps the Eton is slightly less sensitive than the Sony). There is no contest between my Sony 2010 and a communications receiver on an external antenna - for example when LW conditions are really really good on the commuications receiver the longwave broadcast stations will be 30 dB or more above the noise and really good quality listening, on the Sony 2010 with built-in antenna you can just barely tell that there is a station there at all and you certainly can't make out what they are saying.

The benefits of audio filtering
Posted by Andy Bell - KU4XR on January 03, 2008 at 09:08:55.
Does an audio bandwidth filter help ARGO reception in any way ??? - YES !!! Of course the most effective filtering would be in the " IF " stages of your receiver, However::: an audio bandpass filter ( active - or - passive ) has its merits as I proved to myself in reception testing for the past 3 weeks. I hombrewed a very crude passive audio bandpass filter from junkbox parts, the width is around 1.1KHz. My narrowest filter in the rig is 2.4KHz. I placed the filter between the rig and soundcard; using alligator clips for quick removal / comparison. Low rolloff is 150KHz ( no 60 - or - 120Hz anymore ) high rolloff starts gently around 900Hz and most high audio is gone around 1.5KHz. This being a passive device; yes there is noticable insertion loss, but nothing the system can't overcome. It's much easier on the ears, but in regards to ARGO copy, it stopped the static crashes from over limiting ARGO. Before the filter, the ARGO level indicator would " PEG " and the limit light came on with heavy crashes. With the filter in line, level indicator at the half-way point; static crashes just barely move the indicator now, which is a tremendous improvement. The crashes would destroy marginal signals before, where now, they come through. Also strong, adjacent heterodyne would desense the receiver, and weak signals were swallowed up. With the filter in line, if I tune the offending signal about 800Hz away, the filter attenuates it enough that the weak signal begins to come through. This testing convinced me to order an active CW filter kit with bandwidth down to 80Hz and do more testing on filtering received audio and the benefits of doing so. I look forward to posting my results in the near future. Re: LOWFER Beacon 'DPC'

I have been hearing a very strong carrier on 163Khz for the last 3 weeks on at various times. Anyone know who this is ? a resurrection of GWEN?... Meanwhile I have downloaded spectran with no luck on 1750m.. haven't seen anything except for 136KHz activity...kinda frustrating since I can null out the noise with my new noise nuller/ dual L-400B scheme. Well I'll keep trying since I have a bit of time home being layed up with a broken foot.

Sal,
Sorry about the foot. Can't do much for you there...
GWEN is long dead and buried. Strong carriers down there are usually fairly local, and might be power line carriers or just plain electronic gear that radiates a signal. 163 kHz doesn't correspond with a LW broadcast station, so that's ruled out.
You should be able to see TAG on 185.297 and MP on 185.301, especially in the evening. Have you tried Argo instead of Spectran? It's easier to set up -- 30 second slow should be ideal for both of those beacons. Of course, your frequency accuracy is important. The Europe One broadcast station on 183 kHz is a good marker, and usually quite close to frequency. It should be really loud from sunset until their signoff (either 0000 or 0100 UTC -- can't recall). I believe they are back on at 0300 UTC.

Back to radio - I do have a strong carrier here around 163 kHz will try to get a more exact measurement of the frequency.
At the moment TAG on 185.297 is the only consistent Part 15 signal here, but you are another 100 miles further away from TAG.

PAUL Ireland : RTE relies on longwave, anger at AM switch off

It's being billed as "goodbye to an old friend". RTE is to axe Radio 1's
medium-wave services, in a move which has drawn political criticism and
which is set to provoke outrage among churchgoers.
Since 1926, the much-loved service has been a mainstay for people living in
rural areas where FM reception is poor and a vital tool to broadcast church
services.
But station executives believe that modern technology, has signed medium
wave's death warrant, and it will switch off on March 24.
RTE also believes the transmission costs of supplying the service no longer
justifies its existence, since the content is now available elsewhere.
Medium-wave shares almost all its content with the FM version of Radio 1,
except for Sunday religious services and a mid-week soccer game.
There is to be a public information campaign ahead of the switch-off date.
This will highlight the fact that the full Radio 1 MW services will remain
available on long-wave radio.
The broadcaster is also talking to charities about providing subsidised
radios for those who don't have sets with FM or long-wave frequencies.
The station's research shows that one in 10 radio listeners use the
medium-wave version of Radio 1, with the service particularly popular with
the elderly and those living in remote areas.
Fine Gael communications spokesman Simon Coveney said shutting down medium
wave transmissions has implications for people in rural parts of the country
and at sea.
"This is a public service broadcaster and this shouldn't be abandoned," he
said.
Labour communications and marine spokesman Michael McCarthy said the
decision would have the biggest implications for fishermen working 50 or 100
miles off the coast and relying on the broadcasts for weather reports and
for farmers.

Fairly new LW-chaser here... For the last year, I have been
addicted to chasing NDBs and have had moderate success with the built-in ferrite antennas in my GrundigYB 400 PE and G5 portable, taking one or both to camp in upstate NY,and traveling to Ohio, DC, and NYC. Occasionally, I will use my FT-840 HF ham rig at home for LW on a long wire. At Christmas, I got a new Eton E1 receiver.
I opted to get out for some foolishness with my portables on a zero-degree day today,
and was astounded at my luck when adding a roughly 350' coax snake antenna right on the ground at a cornfield near our camp (1o miles from home, but much quieter). For comparison, this big wire pretty much
overloaded the G5 on LW- lots of AM images. But the E1 fielded
hundreds of beacons nicely. I did have to work all the options to
separate some signals that were on top of each other- SSB, AM Sync,
passband, DX/Local. But again, I was able to nicely fatten my NDB log
before I froze my feet and fingers and bailed out. For anyone
interested, I keep my LW stuff here:
http://web.syr.edu/~lhbadman/ndb.html
(For this much coax, a hose-reel makes a nice management tool, BTW.)
Anyone else doing LW with the E1?

I've been a SWL for a few years now, and last September I recieved a Zenith Trans-Oceanic Royal 7000. I love the radio, and it picks up SW well. I've just always wondered what's on LW. It has the LW band (it says "Longwave-FAA Weather" on the dial, though I know longwave weather was discontunued years ago), but all I've been able to hear are what sound like beacons/Soviet space probes (though I seriously doubt it's the latter). Is there anything else on LW? The dial goes from 150 to 400 kHz. Maybe there's just nothing around here (I live about 20 miles northwest of Atlanta, GA). Any suggestions? Hey Matt,
Maybe I can help. I was in similar straits years back with: "What to do now?"
For starters, ask yourself if you have a good knowledge of LW and various equipment that others see as "must have," like a proper antenna, a bandpass filter, etc.
Need more information? Then go to the Home Page here, scroll down and find Sheldon Remington's classic atricle on LW operating. It's organized by chapters. Some of it is dated, having some out-of-date names or products, but the info in general is sound. Read it first for an overview, not tripping on details, then go back as needed. There are other informational Web sources too.
For equipment, many find a dedicated LW antenna that is Properly Installed a necessity. There are commercial ones available that many use with good results. Check out the LF Engineering Web site or Grove Electronics or Universal.

Matt,
The 'soviet space probe' sounds are probably airport beacons. There are lots of other signals, including broadcast stations from Europe/Asia/Africa which are easily copied with the right setup. Good LW reception requires a dedicated LW antenna and a good receiver.

3) The meter IS also handy for checking L of, say, outdoor loading coils, loop ants.

If you have the patience to carefully break into the transformer core, unwrap the layers of shielding tape, and carefully unwind the wire, you will find literally feet upon feet of enameled wire, especially in the larger transformers which also have the larger size of wire. Happy unwinding:

Mine is a MIC LCR, model 4070D, an L, C, R DMM.
Got it from Jameco. Others supply them.
Noticed several DMM LCMs on EBAY for less than $50.

I HAVE TWO QMETERS A BOONTON AND A HEATHKIT. THESE ARE EXCELLENT FOR MEASURING COILS. IF YOU HAVE A SIGNAL GEN
YOU CAN CHECK THE Q BY EMPRICAL METHOD OF PEAKING THE TUNED
CIRCUIT AND TUNING OFF TO THE -3DB POINTS. THE 3DB BANDWITH
DIVIDED INTO THE RESONANT FREQ IS THE Q.
TRY DOWNLOADING THE MANUAL FOR THE HEATH QMETER FROM ONE OF THE INTERNET SITES IT HAS A LOT OF THEORY ABOUT THE MEASUREMENT OF Q. ALSO SEARCH FOR "Q-METER" AND YOU WILL FIND SEVERAL HOMEBREW PROJECTS.
THE HEATH QMETER SHOWS UP ON EBAY FREQUENTLY. RANGE IS 140KHZ TO 18MHZ Q UP TO 500.

Matt,
First, welcome to the hobby and this board. Your Trans-Oceanic is a great radio. Enjoy it. I know I do mine. Most of what you'll hear with it on the longwave band will be non-directional navigation beacons, as you've found. BTW, If you want to learn Morse code try to copy the callsigns they send. Since it's repetitive and you have a captive audience, a fellow can listen to it until he gets it down. The 'space sounds' you refer to are probably DGPS signals. They occupy mainly the 280 to 330 Khz range and have a sort of warbling sound as opposed to the Morse of the NDB's. Some folks make a complete hobby out of DX'ing beacons.
But you want to know if there is anything else to hear on LW. There is – your Trans-O will also tune the frequencies used by longwave broadcasters who use the band in Europe and Africa pretty much the way we use MW BCB here in the U.S. They employ much higher powers, and one of their LW BC stations can cover an entire country or even a continent in some cases. But my experience shows you'll have to be patient to capture any LW broadcasters with the T-O, and conditions will have to be just right. On the upside, living near the East Coast gives you a fighting chance.
I can hear EU/AF LW BC stations here in northern Michigan pretty much nightly with my TS-940 using an outside active antenna. And on a few occasions, when signals were very strong, I have listened to 153 Khz (Algeria), 162 Khz (France), 171 Khz (Morocco), and 183 Khz (Germany) on my Trans-Oceanic portable, using only its internal antenna. That was a blast. So it'll be a challenge on the Trans-O, but do-able.
Please keep us posted on your efforts and results.

AN OUT OF STATE REPORT. WMS HAS BEEN ON THE AIR FOR ABOUT ONE YEAR. TILL
YESTERDAY LONGEST REPORT WAS FROM 41 MILES. REPAIRS TO THE TRANSMITTER AND
BATTERY CHARGING CIRCUIT GAINED ME ABOUT 2 1/2 TIMES THE ANTENNA CURRENT, SO
I GUESS I AM FINALLY GETTING THE JOB DONE.
DAVE'S GRABBER CAN BE VIEWED AT www.lowfer.us/mograb.htm . CALIBRATION OF

BEST TIME LAST NIGHT WAS FROM ABOUT 0200UTC TO 0600 UTC. SIGNAL WAS VISIBLE

Posted by Todd WD4NGG on January 27, 2008 at 07:59:28.
Hi All,
I haven't listened below 30KHz on VLF in the past 2 weeks but noticed Sunday morning 01/27/08 1500UTC that superpower NWC 19.8KHz is back on the air from Australia with a great signal.
Thanks to Harry Weber who sent in an update report on NWC 19.8KHz in the January 08 LowDown. It seems NWC was off the air for several months for refurbishing. They must have done a great job as their signal sounds better than ever.
I also noticed on Sunday morning 01/27 around 1515UTC there is a new signal on 17.8KHz. They seemed to be testing with a more standard-shift RTTY signal. I tuned in again around 1530UTC and the signal changed to what sounded like some kind of high-speed digital roar but did not sound too broadband as the signal was still sharp tuning on my R75. I had heard this signal before several times but it is intermittent. It sounded strong enough that it could be in this hemisphere as daytime strength was on a par with other USA VLF stations. Must be testing some kind of new modulation mode with this new signal on 17.8KHz.

The benefits of audio filtering - #2
Posted by Andy - KU4XR on January 27, 2008 at 08:26:47.
The benefits of audio filtering:: For those who may not be able to find - or - afford the narrow " CW " filter for your rig; this may be of interest to you. As promised in an earlier post, I want to share with those interested, what I have determined from my recent experiments in audio filtering. I started with passive homebrewed circuits, lots of experimenting, but quickly determined that audio filtering adds benefits to the reciever setup. The " Cons " to passive filtering is the tremendous insertion loss. After a few components you start to run out of reciever volume. Using junkbox parts I put together a Highpass and a Lowpass filter and connected them together and ended up with about 1.8KHz of usable bandwidth using USB mode. Signals were about 35 to 40dB down at each end of the BW.
Seeing the benefit; I purchased a Vectronics Active audio filter ( type left out to avoid advertising )
It has an 80Hz narrow setting, and never using narrow filters before, I was astonished at what it did to recieved signals in the passband. about a 15dB increase in S/N ratio. Signals were coming through that before were in the noise. In just a few hours of use; I am addicted to narrow BW now. No more ear busting static crashes. The only thing I modified in the filter, was the addition of a Highpass filter on the input. without it, the ARGO display showed heavy 60 ( -35dB ), 120, 240Hz AC hum from the ground commons. With it only the 60Hz is barely visible and -85dB down.
Thanks for your time reading this; and I hope someone will find it useful information.

The latest observence on 1/27 at 2140 utc is that simultaneous carriers were noted all quite strong. 163, 218, 254, 271 and 326 Khz observed together, all DF'd at ~323 deg hr in FN31nh ~WNW. All went off at the same time, also confirmed at an earlier date. I don't know what all this is about. Meanwhile in the 185.3 watering hole I'm getting weak poorly defined data and I think I copied TAG, will try again.

John Andrews, W1TAG / WD2XES / WE2XGR/3 A curious propagation observation
Posted by Andy - KU4XR on January 28, 2008 at 08:38:18.
A curious observation: I began monitoring 1750 meters here in Tn. in Nov. almost daily, with computer & ARGO, added narrow filter, etc; etc; etc. Nov. was strong propogation for me. LW broadcasters at 20 to 30dB over S-9; pulling in LOWfer beacons with no effort, however the operators farther north were saying they weren't seeing anything much. In late Dec., I noticed the signals began to weaken, and not appear as often or as long. By early Jan. 08 it's like a desert, virtually no signals to be found anywhere, while on the other hand, the operators farther north are now reporting strong signals. www.vlf.it update
This is my first " REAL " attempt at monitoring 1750 meters, so I have a lot to learn. Now: here's the dumb statement / question : " Surely geographic location would not have that much effect on propogation at any given time or location !!! " The South receives, the North dosen't. Then Vice Versa. Those of you that have been around here for awhile can probably shed some great light on this topic for me. And I certainly appreciate your patience and input.
By the way: the difference between dumb, and stupid is: Dumb is asking or doing something when you don't know any better. Stupid, is: knowing better, and asking or doing it anyway. ( certainly won't find that in the dictionary ).
A sidebar: conditions on 137KHz seem to have improved when 160 - 190KHz dropped ???

Bill KB9IV New 2008 NANDBH & ENDBH
Posted by Michael on January 29, 2008 at 11:44:12.
Hi all,
For those of you that like to tune the NDB bands from time to time I'd
like to announce that the 2008 edition of the ENDBH & NANDBH handbooks
and CDs is now available.
An info package can be downloaded at
http://www.4shared.com/file/36265996/7e8331c6/2008_ndb_info_package.html
or
http://tinyurl.com/27j5ku
The new ENDBH 2008 contains the data of more than 6200 NDBs on 150+
spiral-bound pages in A4 format. Also the NANDBH 2008 has grown and
shows the data of more than 5700 NDBs on 130+ pages.
As introduced with last year's edition the CD versions contain Google
Earth compatible NDB waypoint files so that you can "visit" NDB
locations around the globe. The multimedia contents of the CD version
have been expanded to a total of more than 160 NDB pictures and over
170 NDB sound clips from around the world.
Prices in Euro remained stable once again, but US-$ prices had to be
adjusted due to the Euro/US-$ exchange rate. Please find more details
in the info package.
I'd like to take this opportunity to say many thanks to NDB DXers who
have sent me comments and updates, pointed out errors, or provided NDB
pictures and sound clips etc. Your support is very much appreciated
and an invaluable help and encouragement for me!

Class E vs. Class C what's your opinion
Posted by Andy - KU4XR on January 30, 2008 at 18:15:50.
Hello all: I've been doing a lot of reading trying to determine a stable and cheap oscillator, and I have noticed a lot of info about Class E xmtrs for best efficiency, especially for a lowfer xmtr. If you have any experience with Class E; what's your opinion on the matter ? In terms of efficiency; cost and difficulty to construct and tune; and so forth. As always; all info. will be most appreciated. WEB good signal in Arkansas

WEB on QRSS30 has a good signal here tonight. Using Spectran. -43db during the odd hours. All during the 7 to 8 PM CST was solid copy. On the even hours I get a good line at-52db but my systen can't seperate the dots from the dashes when he goes to CW mode. 73 David
190 Khz Broadcast in Minnesota
Posted by Bill Marvin KB9IV on January 31, 2008 at 11:58:12.
Hello Group
I've been trying to log my first LowFer here in So. MN......no luck. Between fending thru variable 60Hz Buzz and pulse bursts it hasn't been easy. I'm using
a R390A, 80M G5RV(80M), Palomar VLF-S and different audio filtering.
However the terrible Noise seems to abait around 0600 UTC. The VLF Band, LW are
quite readable to it's noise floor. At 0800UTC (2 AM local) I was receiving a
AM Broadcast in Spanish on 189 Khz....steady moderate signal. Tonight I''ll use my Sherwood SE3 MK3 for better clarity.
Is this reception a Spur? I receive no other BC or SW Spurs? I have no reference for logging ID's yet. The freq 189 Khz is plus/minus 1 Khz.
Thanks in advance!

Are you sure that it's Spanish?
189kHz is Iceland. They play a lot of American Pop/Rock music.

Bill,
Another tip, if you can measure the frequency accurately and its 189kHz its a good bet it's Iceland, if its 190kHz then its probably an intermod product.
