XGJ And XKO Copied In Colorado
Posted by Jerry, KD0GS on January 04, 2009 at 22:02:02.

Monitoring a booming signal from WD2XKO on 137.777 KHz tonight, suddenly a nice signal from WD2XGJ popped-up a few minutes before 10:00 PM MST (0500 UTC). Would have been a nice copy from both if not for the blasted noise that appeared this evening.

My Argo capture is here:

It's about 1752 miles from Longmont, CO to Wayland, MA.

189kHz Iceland
Posted by Jeff W0ODS on January 06, 2009 at 08:34:14.

Last night, ~0400Z 06 January UTC, Iceland was rolling in on 189 kHz. Heard Roberta Flack's "Set the night to music," followed by an unidentified classic-rock sounding song (with a great guitar riff, FWIW). Sigs faded during the last song. This heard on the Sangean portable.

Also coming in regularly to Eastern Iowa are Algeria on 153, France Inter on 162, Morocco on 171, Felsburg-Berus Germany on 183 kHz, and a very light BBC Radio 4 on 198 kHz under beacon DIW. These sigs are heard regularly.

Location: Coggon IA 51128
Equipment: 2500 ft single-wire beverage, bearing 40 degrees
Kachina 505DSP or Sangean ATS-818CS portable.

Streaming Audio server for the station is being beta-tested.

Beacon " XR " to try for X-Band contacts tonite @ 00:00 UTC
Posted by Andy - XR on January 10, 2009 at 12:54:56.

Hi Everyone:

I want to try a X-Band CW experiment for about an hour tonite and see if anyone can copy " XR " in CW mode. I will begin calling CQ at 00:00 UTC( 7pm EST ) on my frequency at 184.322 KHz.
I will be listening at 3.570 MHz . I am not a proficient CW OP so please, if you do hear me and respond, keep the speed between 10 to 13 wpm.I will be looking to just basically exchange reports, short and sweet you see. Also, I will not have computer access during this time because my computer generates a +5dB over S-9 noise in the 80 meter band, so it will be off during the experiment. Hopefully my TV, and daughters computer won't kill my receiver. finally, if the frequency happens to be busy, I will find a quite one, and send QSX up / down ?? Kc's. Thanks in advance to anyone who tries tonite, even if you only hear me but can't Xmit, send an email of your reception, I will turn the computer back on at 01:00 UTC ( 8pm EST ) and check for emails.

Open future for Northern Star International Broadcasters AS
Posted by Mike Terry on January 13, 2009 at 15:03:51.

January 3rd, 2009 - 18:33 UTC by Andy Sennitt- Media Network

At its General Meeting on 8 December in Bergen, Norway, the shareholders of Northern Star International Broadcasters AS (66,48 % of the issued shares represented) voted to be open for different future scenarios for Northern Star International Broadcasters AS, the company still holding a provisional licence for the AM frequency Longwave 216 kHz, power 1.2 Million Watts, offered by Norway’s Mass Media Authority.

The founder and chairman Svenn Martinsen writes in an editorial: ”Early in 2008 our company invited its shareholders to an internal debate as to the future of our radio project. On the background of the received inputs the board has attempted to formulate a strategy for the way forward. This was voted over in the recent GM. For the public, we’d like to offer the following honest evaluation as to where we stand as of January 1st, 2009.”

Nice night for NDB DX!
Posted by Gregg on January 15, 2009 at 01:40:39.

The shortwave bands were dead as a doornail tonight and I'm glad for that. I went down under 500KHz instead.... got one of my longest catches - YHD on 413KHz @ 0000 PST. A distance of 2090 Km! :-)

Northern Saskatchewan and Northwest Territories are usually in my dead zone, but were coming in too pretty good.

Using my loop (article here a couple months back) indoors + Eton E5.

Cheers!

XR heard in West Georgia
Posted by Jim on January 18, 2009 at 05:10:17.

I started chasing NDBs about four months ago and have become interested in the unlicensed and experimental LF beacons recently. Last night was my first catch in the unlicensed band.

I had XR captured using Argo overnight from about 0530z thru 0830z (started just after midnight local time) with some QSB but clearly readable most of the time. Also saw it at 1030z thru 1130z with heavy QSB and not very readable.

I was running Argo at QRSS-10 & Slow so that I'd have a larger frequency window. Looks like it was at around 184.323 kHz +/- a Hz or so. Can't be exact, but it looks like it was about 5 dB over the noise floor once it made it into audio.

Radio was a Yaesu FT-857D and antenna was a active mini-whip based loosely on the PA0RDT design up at about 20 feet.

I am hoping to put a beacon on the air myself at some point. Still in the early stages of planning and with too many project to get to as it is, but I'm a bit more motivated now that I know it's possible to actually hear these things.

WLO is a commerical (ship station) in Mobile AL. You can do a search on the FCC ULS data base and see the licensed frequencies. Interesting to note that it was on the air. I do not think there are many if any merchant Mariner ships that still have equipment for that frequecny other than Military or Navy ships (subs)

Beacon " XR " QSL cards
Posted by Andy - XR on January 21, 2009 at 13:35:40.

Hey Everyone:

Hope you're having fun this season. I just received a batch of
QSL cards for " XR ". I haven't ordered QSL cards in 20 years,
I guess that shows how exciting this LOWfer stuff is to me.
Like Paul - WMS tells me: " It's the most fun you can have in
radio and still keep you clothes on !! " hi hi . I will be
sending a card out shortly to everyone who has sent me a report,
I have kept them on file since I fired " XR " up. I'll be using
address'es from QRZ, so If you have sent me a report, and your
QRZ address is not correct; will you email me so I don't send
it to the wrong address. Thanks and Good LOWfer-ing; 73 ::

Hi Michael,

I haven't heard any of the NDBs you mentioned although I have heard some of the deleted beacons in years past but not lately.

Since you mentioned deletions, two of the regulars here, FN-269, Flint, MI & AMN-329, Alma, MI have been silent for several weeks. You may want to check on these, too.. 73s.

It must be taking a polar shot then.

I've heard it off and on, but just dismissed it as an image from a local east Indian music station.

Cheers!

Hi Glenn,

I note your MN locale...I'm in N IL and also notice the Big ONE of 183KHz, as in Euro-1. It's an RF monster in Germany, huge antenna masts and 2,000 KW. I say 'notice' because I'm more interested to weak signal listening at 185.300KHz and hear some splatter.

Ha, one can wonder why we don't also hear it on our toasters!

Check out this and other BC'ers.

MP into Georgia
Posted by Jim W4JBM on January 24, 2009 at 15:03:00.

Set the radio up to record a couple of times last night. Going through with Argo, I found a pretty solid copy of MP here in West Georgia at around 0800z and 1000z this morning. Dial was 185.3kHz and this was just above the normal CW beat note. (But Argo doesn't seem that accurate with audio frequencies even with the correction entered--not sure what's up.)

Hey Jim:
Congrats on catching " MP ". Mitch has a good ant. setup, and can usually be a good dependable signal to look for. His freq. is 185301.1 KHz. About ARGO, it is an audio analyzing software of sorts, It detects any audio tones, and displays them at their respective frequency. Once ARGO is calibrated, it is very close. You can't split hairs with it like some other programs out there, but it's main purpose is to dig out those signals below the noise floor, and display a visual plot of the signal ( audio tone ) received on screen. Have fun, and good luck in your LOWfer hunting: 73:: Andy - " XR " - Friendsville, TN.

Cross Band QSO's with Part-15 stations
Posted by Andy - XR on January 26, 2009 at 09:38:01.

Hey Everyone:

You live and learn. Recently, I had made a request for Amateur stations to participate in a CrossBand QSO attempt, with me on 1750 meters in CW, and listening on 80 meters in CW.I was not really sure about the CrossBand QSO issue with a Part-15 station, and any other stations such as Ham, & Part-5. However, I was brought up to speed very quickly by Dr. Fritz Raab - W1FR of the 500 KHz Experimental Group, that FCC rules prohibit communications with an un-licensed Part-15 station by Ham, or Part-5 licensees. QSO's between Part-15 stations are of course permissable.
That's a great challenge just waiting to be done. Others have in the past, and more can in the future. I'm hoping to be one of those. 73 for now, and Good LOWfer-ing::

Even though you can't have a crossband QSO, you can have a "beacon spotters net". The 10 meter beacon operators have an informal "top of hour" gathering place on 28.327 MHz.

Of course their advantage is that if you can hear their beacon, you can probably work them since it's likely their main rig is more powerful than their beacon transmitter.

Might pull the same thing off meeting on 160 meters, but I know I don't have enough copper in the air to load up my rig on 160. :-)

Thinking about the times I've seen XR, it's early morning (starting around 1 AM and usually another window before sunrise). Probably wouldn't have too much trouble finding a frequency and making the distance on 40 meters some morning if you want real-time feedback.

What would be really cool is being able to take Argo captures and send them as SSTV pics every 15 minutes or so.

BTW, was looking at QRZ to check what class license you had (to see if 160 or 40 was even an option) and if nobody has told you, it's time to renew.

171 R. Medi, has dropped down a little, now. I also had fair audio on 252 amidst the NDB's; male announcer, AA talk. 153 has a good carrier strength and is copiable, but their low modulation level lessens the impact. 162 is good but not as good as 171, which is tops, tonight. What is your rig and antenna? TS940 and active whip at 32 feet, here.

Rig here is a Kenwood TS940 and a Cushcraft 40-10 meter dipole. Not quite what you would want to use but it works great. Have the Arabic male announcer now at 171KC. Getting stronger here. Would like to put up a long wire and get the 8 foot amplified loop up for next season.
