Wow, John that is an EXCELLENT explanation! And again, your point is quite valid.

I do recall reading about the case where amateur licensee N9OGL was transmitting on 13.556 Mhz. using a lot of power, and programming like a SW station. There is an extensive paper trail available online. The FCC's issue was not about using his amateur callsign on the 22m band (he wasn't), it was his exceeding the radiation limits of part 15.225, by perhaps several hundreds of watts on the 22m band.

This amateur call on 22m issue is pretty trivial. I had no idea it would become an issue. I am truly sorry for any trouble this may be causing anyone. Honestly, I do not intend to break any rules or create any pestilence in the part 15 community.

This has, however, become an interesting topic. By getting a clarification from a local field agent (who would ultimately be the one who inspects my beacon in the event of a complaint), I thought that was "horse's mouth" enough. Since this is becoming a concern to more than just me, I will email the district director and see if I can get a clarification. I'll let you know what I hear.

Thank you again for all of your help! I am the first to admit I do not know it all, receiving help from those more knowledgeable than me is much appreciated.

Marconi Day success on 500kHz
Posted by Mike Terry on May 02, 2009 at 00:15:16.

This year, on Marconi Day, a Marconi official station using Marconi equipment completed a radio contact that was similar to those Marconi himself achieved many years ago. During the late hours of Friday 24 April and the early hours of Saturday 25 April, GB4FPR was operated from the Fort Perch Rock Marine Radio Museum in the Wirral, UK. Using a newly obtained 501kHz to 504kHz NOV licence, they managed a transatlantic QSO on 502kHz with a station in St. John's, Newfoundland. The operators used Marconi marine equipment and Morse and received a 539 report from V01MRC. It was a crossband QSO with GB4FPR transmitting 1 watt ERP on 502kHz and receiving the Canadian station on 3566kHz.

Fort Perch Rock was built as a coastal defence battery during the Napoleonic period to protect the Port of Liverpool. It is open all year round and features museums, exhibitions and a tea-room.

UN ID HiFer
Posted by Paul on May 16, 2009 at 07:54:49.

Was listening around 13.562 last night and heard a beacon that was IDing at about 25 WPM. The QSB was real strong, I would get 2 or 3 letters 5-9 and then fade to noise level. Could tell it was there, but not enough for positive ID.

I was able to clearly copy a couple of letter groups more than once. They were-

QJY
MJ

Also heard the number 7 sent in the string somewhere. The beacon was sending the same string over and over, but it was full of too much information, and just a bit too fast for me considering the strong QSB.

Can someone please help identify? Thank you in advance!

Probably wasn't a beacon. In the past, it was not uncommon to hear espionage "numbers stations" in this part of the spectrum, sending code groups (typically in clusters of five digits at a time) from who-knows-where to who-knows-whom.

Thanks for the reply, John.

I am a former 'numbers station' junkie. I am very familiar with them. Spent my childhood losing sleep at night seeking them out and copying the code groups. Ahh.. Memories!

Anyway, this was no numbers station, it was a beacon. It kept sending the same message over and over, but the QSB was so bad, and the code was so fast, I just couldn't grab it.

I have been testing my HiFer beacon on 13.5658 MHz.
ID is 'ESA ESA ESA' 5 second dash, repeated. Using a
3 foot piece of wire for antenna clipped to the metal
garage door. No ground and using 12 V gel cell.
Beacon runs about 5 milliwatts output. A better antenna
is in the works. My QTH is San Jose, CA CM97BJ.
I wonder if you may have been confused hearing the QSB

Actually, I have been wanting to get in contact with you anyway to discuss beaconing! Please get in touch when possible. My info is good on QRZ and hamcall.net websites.

It wasn't ESA either. Maybe someone was just experimenting or something, I don't know. At this point- It wouldn't surprise me to learn it was a ham messing around.

My HiFer was on the air way before I ever let anyone know about it. This may be a similar case where someone put a beacon on the air and has yet to get the word out about it.

Speaking of.. My HiFer is on a mountain to your East. There is a lot of mountain between you and it, but not many air miles. Are you able to copy it?

" XR " D.C. USB XMTR Progress
Posted by Andy - XR on May 18, 2009 at 12:36:07.

Greetings all:

Moving at the incredible speed of the great slimey slug; minute
progress is being made. Unfortunately not on the actual Xmtr
itself. Still procurring parts, robbing PC boards and such, and
trying to determine ( from my own way of thinking ) what will be
the easiest, and effective circuit for each stage of the Xmtr.

My most exciting part of the project so far, came over the
weekend, when my wife managed to talk me into going to the local
flea market. I'm glad she did !! I bought a Toshiba Laptop for
$ 50.00, loaded with XP-PRO. It's a 366 MHz P-II with 194 Megs
of memory and a 7 GB HDD. I wasn't sure that system could handle
XP-PRO, but after hours of pushing it to the edge, it works fine.
I have loaded JASON, and MultiPSK to use for MFSK-16 & 8, and
Spetrum Lab to use for S/MT Hellschrieber, and DFCW. I figured
that Spec Lab would be the program that would kill the machine,
but surprisingly, this little critter has performed exceptionally.
The program that has facinated me the most is S/MT Hell. Once I
began to figure out how to work the DigiMode terminal ( Wheeew ),
I started to see what Hellschrieber can do. I started experimenting
with the program parameters, which are user adjustable; and I
have the program running the characters " X R in a 3 Hz vetical
bandwidth. It takes 10 minutes to Xmit the sequence at the baud
rate I'm trying, .025 sym/sec. I have no idea what WPM, or QRSS
speed that would be, but using a 5 second scroll rate in SpecLab
QRSS 10 mode, and a 70 Hz window; the image is pristine, with
no noise of course !! I can invision a great QRSS image
generator here. With digimode and the S/MT Hell 7/5 font, I can
set the vertical BW at 1 Hz, and a tone length of " Whatever ".
This will be the program that I will be experimenting with I'm
sure, quite alot.

As with any project; I just need to get that first component on
the board, and the adrenaline will take over from there.

If none of the beacon ops keep their beacon on, that is a sure way of losing people to monitor the band for activity.

Someone has to make the first move, may as well be the beacon ops, in my opinion.

The problem with "free" information on the Internet is often that it's priced very close to what it's worth. At one time, this was the most accessed reference on TIS/HAR stations:

http://www.angelfire.com/sc/scannerpost/tisgov.html

However, it hasn't been updated in over 10 years. Since mediumwave licensed stations aren't really in the LWCA's purview, I would recommend contacting the National Radio Club or the IRCA to see what they might have on the subject.

I found other ones that are more current but found holes in them also. I guess the best thing would be to do is do a search on the FCC website for the licenses that are current and go from there. I heard one yesterday thats about 25 miles away in Wisconsin. The TX is on always with a repeating message and the license ID is no longer valid but the state of Wisconsin did apply and get a totally new license for the site. The only thing wrong is the voice ID has the expired license on the message.

Hifer NC
Posted by John Andrews, W1TAG on May 27, 2009 at 11:11:21.

While up in Maine this past weekend, I heard/saw a dead carrier just above 13555.5 kHz. The fading and times of the day suggested it might be W4DEX's old NC hifer beacon from North Carolina. But it lacked the original FSK square-wave keying. I emailed Dex, and sure enough, a 555 timer was loose in its socket. He pushed on it, and it started keying again.

For those who wish to look, try setting your receiver to 13555.55 kHz and use an Argo or similar 3-second screen. If it's copyable, you should get a "square wave" somewhere on the screen.

Hi John,
I'll give ARGO a try, I did hear a carrier around that frequency , so It might be NC ....meanwhile EH is on 24/7 on 13557.2 MHz. Maybe propagation will finally improve.
later....Sal

It's good to know what happened to NC. That was one of the benchmark HiFER signals for ages...and apparently still is. :)

Super Narrow-band communication on 1750 meters
Posted by Doug Buhrman on May 28, 2009 at 20:55:26.

Back in the early 90's I remember reading an article on narrow-band communications on 1750 meters. I don't remember the name of the magazine. What ever became of that project? Are there still people experimenting with this mode? Are there updates to this type of communication using DSP chips or soundcards with DSP software?

Doug,

Dedicated DSP chip projects have pretty much been set aside, but there are various sound card based modes in use at 1750 ("Part 15") and 2200 meters (Experimental or Amateur outside of the U.S.). Some possibilities may be found at:
http://www.w1tag.com/Modes.htm

The goal is less to occupy a narrow bandwidth than to improve the signal to noise ratio, allowing copy of weaker signals. Of course, the two things are related. When you reduce CW speed so that each dot takes 30 seconds, a typical DSP-generated screen on the receiving end is only 6 Hz wide. And you can fit many signals into that slice:

HiFER Beacons into West Georgia
Posted by Jim W4JBM on May 29, 2009 at 18:46:26.

Have EH coming in on 13557.10 kHz and HI coming in on 13558.01 kHz. Both are decent with audible copy possible. (Have recordings if anyone is interested.)

Also seeing a signal around 12557.25 kHz. It has a "whoop" tone to it and the Spectrogram shows it's a rising note that levels off. Seems to be about a quarter second of rising and then maybe a total of a second in length. But it's very weak and not repeated very often. Any ideas on that?

Hi Jim,
I'm glad to hear that the propagaton is picking up again. If you have the recordings in jpeg or wav , just email me (see above). HI is about 20 miles west of me. I have not heard his signal so far this year and sometimes there is a short skip or scatter and I can copy him. At what time/ date did you copy EH and HI?
thanx ....later, Sal

Thanks for the info John. I will look into the soundcard software.

NC into West Georgia
Posted by Jim W4JBM on May 30, 2009 at 10:34:12.

It didn't last long, but I caught NC on 13555.52 kHz at 1725z. Got an Argo screen of it.

Considering I'd never caught any the HiFER beacons before and now I've caught three in two days, maybe things are turning around.

K6HFC Hifer beacon
Posted by Mark on May 31, 2009 at 09:30:05.

Am copying the K6HFC Hifer beacon on 13565 this morning. Its doing real well at times, even gets just as strong as the pulsing OTHR? Whatever it is, it is strong again today and makes copying Hifers almost impossible!

Could you have meant the 'K6FRC' HiFer beacon?

Would be happy to QSL if you confirm the ID.

Thanks,

Paul
