Hello all,
Despite the high levels of QRN this time of year, I had success over the
weekend in receiving "TEXAS" on BPSK at MS200 ET1 from ~200 miles away,
in the City of Austin. I will write-up a short article for the LOWDOWN
describing the details...

Lowfer VA is off 'til fall. Medfer VA continues, but may be retired this fall to allow a bit more room for the lowfer elevated ground system.

- Subject: BPSK-ONLY MS200 ET1 this Weekend...
From: "William Cantrell"
Reply-To: qa0057 email.mot.com
Hello All,
Those of you who like to brave the high levels of LF QRN this time of
year can try for the TEXAS Beacon over the next few days, as I will be
running some BPSK-only experiments. The chicken-wire ground-plane has
been rolled back out too. TEXAS will be running BPSK-only at a slower
baud rate (MS200). The beacon is set to send
TEXAS(space) with a run length of 6, MS200, ET1, on 189.700 kHz, +/- one
part in one billion.
It will remain this way until some time on Monday, 5/24/99. After that
time, the ground-plane will be rolled back up for the summer, and TEXAS
will revert to CW-only operation...

- Subj: lf receiver

From: mjanoff usoracle (Mitch Janoff)
Hello. I'm just starting as a listener in the hf and lf ranges. I am
building a precision timekeeping station and as part of that I bought
some old ex mil receivers. For HF I am using an R390a with a SSB unit
and for lf I bought (as part of a package) an R-1134/WRR-3 Long Wave
Receiver. I really don't know anything about it but it does seem to
work. I am looking for information on building an antenna that I can
use for 60khz and for 100khz. Also, once I build the antenna I need to
locate the second pulses in the 60khz and 100khz signals. Can you offer
any assistance here or point me in the right direction. Also, any
information on the lw receiver would be useful. I don't have a manual
or any other info on the unit.
Thanks for your assistance

Hello all,
I have uploaded a schematic diagram of my 74HC4053 up-converter
to my web site.
http://home4.swipnet.se/~w-41522/lfconv/lfconv.html
I haven't made any measurements on it but it seems to work
very well. There is no input filter on the converter. A tuned loop
with preamp provides adequate front end selectivity.

- Subj: Suggestion for Lowfers
Date: 99-05-17 07:50:16 EDT
From: reynoldf rlafmil (Frank Reynolds)
If you are looking for reception reports, I suggest lowering the speed
of your CW I.D. to about 5 wpm and have it happen at a specific, say,
on the hour for 10 or 15 minutes. Beacon Chasers, like me, can't make
out the high speed code even if we could hear it. I've been trying for
about a year now to hear one of you with no luck. I have been able to
hear lots of NDBs & RTTY down to 23 KHz but no Lowfers.
I will keep trying though.

I am looking for information on buried VLF or MF antenna reception models.
Does anyone have a suggestion?
Thank you for your advice.

I'm interested in getting into Lowfer operations. Can anyone point me to a good place to start to get a radio on the air, either by kit, commercial or used?
Thanks!

Has anyone any experiences - good or bad - with either the MFJ-1024
or Sony AN-1 outdoor active antennas for beacon monitoring? Comments on
mechanical reliability as well as electrical performance are appreciated.

- Very interested in the LF ham allocation and hoping to see an announcement on operation by the people which received experimental licenses.
- Have finished updating my web page and doubled it in size including new pages on our Bahamas trip, Tesla coils, Bugs (semi-automatic keys) and shunt-fed antennas. It is at www.qsl.net/w9rb/
- Beacon RB is off the air until fall when I hope to have a new loading coil installed.

The 'RW' VLF Beacon is now on the air from 1700 to 0700 MDT. Now you can listen in the early morning hours on 164 kHz for the 'RW' Beacon.
Those pesky thunderstorms are starting up again...
The transmissions are CW (A1) at 15 WPM. Use your narrow CW filter.
The Beacon is sending 'RW' (dit dah dit, dit dah dah).
The Beacon is transmitting continuously on weekends, and 1700 to 0700 MDT weekdays.
You can check the VLF propagation by listening to other Colorado NavAid Beacons and finding your best antenna for them.
Try listening for 'IHS' on 335 kHz, and 'CO' on 407 kHz, all in Colorado Springs.
Also try to copy 'TAD' on 329 kHz, in Trinidad CO, about 150 miles south of Colorado Springs.
These NavAids are running Modulated CW (A2). .
There is a Long Wave QSL sent out for all Long Wave Listener (LWL) reports...

FYI: I just got a beacon on the air. It is on 175 KHz and its ID is 5FEK
(short for N5FEK- my ham callsign). Coordinates are:
n 35,59.697 w 95,51.409. Location is Bixby, OK. I am using a modest
inverted L antenna laid on the peak of the roof of our 2-story house and
using the copper water pipe as a ground. This is the best I can do for now.
I would appreciate any signal reports.
