Test transmission on 12.3 kHz
Hi. Right now at 0635utc there is an ongoing test transmission on 12.3 kHz. FSK idle, unid mode. Bearing from here ~ 70/250 deg.

HiFer WV has a new antenna now. I am using a 1/4 wave vertical ground mounted with a box at the bottom and a 15 inch coax lead in and a ground system at the base buried in the ground ...still running the 1.5 milliwatts and cw 7wpm keying..if you listen for HI i should be there....please take a listen....mike in West Virginia....wa8ywo.com Cuttyhunk Island VLF/ LW

Hey All. I just got back from a DXpedition to Cuttyhunk Island,Ma. It is a VERY RF clean place. Antenna was a 250 ft low long wire and gnd was a pipe. All the expected Afro Euro LW B'casts were generally fair to well copied despite HUGE static crashes. Of special note was Ireland and Iceland, two of my favorites. Also had CFH 122.5 and many other utility stations(NAA,etc).
For natural radio/tweeks I had ant. to two hi z "crystal" earphones in series to gnd. Phones were 200K choked. Good mix of lightning , tweeks , etc,w/ v. slt 60 Hz.
Thunderstorm crashes on crystal set, especially on low end.FWIW, much AM b'cast band long haul DX on crystal set, two transistor Boy's radio (just using internal ferrite) and Icom R-70 quad conversion. de K

Only noticed your post this afternoon and no transmission when I listened.
However, noting your location 59.033N 11.033E a bit of spherical trigonometry gives the following bearings from your location for great circle routes to Anthorn 54:54N 3:18W of 248.5deg and to Skelton 54:42N 2:53W of 246.4 deg.
Now whilst Rugby on 16kHz / 15.975kHz and Criggion have closed, I have wondered whether they were replaced by only one other transmitter on 19.6 kHz (Anthorn/Skelton?) or maybe this is the testing of the second half?

I assume that the location indicated(FN33) is near Rutland, VT. Signals in the range of RST449, with both 145ft. ENE and 105ft. WSW LW's. Rcvr R-5000/500Hz filter, indicates 13,559.0KHz. Date--08/05/07, 2300-2350UT. QTH here EM50bk. Very good propagation for 7mW signal. Ed

Hi all, HiFer HI heard
New to this list but not to LW dxing. Found a tuning unit in the local junk yard and wondered if anyone is using this unit to pretune an antenna before their receiver and if anyone has a SCHEMATIC! Or a operators guide. I've tried to trace the circuit, but it is very tedious and the variometers are a wonder to behold. Range is 200-500 khz, perfect for Beacon freqs. Signal Corp Tuning Unit TU 26 B 200-500Khz Made in 1942 and in great shape inside but outside is ugly!

HI beacon(13558.0KHz) first heard around 2044UT, and continously till at least 2337UT. Signal was RST 449 to 459 at maximum, but with deep fades. NHVT heard briefly around 2240UT, RST 449, but faded out quickly. RX R-5000, with 145ft LW ENE. QTH EM50bk. Using an old atlas map of the U.S., this works out to 1300+ mi., and around 200K mi. per watt--good efficiency. Listened for EH on 561.5, but not heard. Splatter from SW bcst on 13570KHz makes it difficult. Ed The Keniometer (Aug 2007 Lowdown)

Hi all, Did anyone reproduce Ken Cornell's ferrite goniometer? If so, I am interested to know how well it worked. I dont quite understand (maybe believe is a better term) that the two antennas can be mixed into the pickup loop with variable phase in that arrangement. Was it directional? could one steer a null as one would with a traditional gonio? I believe Ken is a 'silent key' now so we can't ask him. The other problem that worries me with that type of arrangement is that the three coils could act as antennas as well (loop-sticks is your term for them I think) unless the whole thing is screened. It is certainly an interesting idea, and thanks for "remixing it"......fodder for experimentation !
Thanks and Cheers de Alan G3NYK

Irish public broadcaster RTÉ has started testing DRM.
Enda O'Kane writes: "DRM will be carried on RTÉ's longwave 252 kHz
transmitter. Nightly commencing 08/08/07 until 15/08/07 from 0100 to 0700
UTC.
In addition to above :
Mon August 13th commencing 2100 ending 0800 on Tues Aug 14th
Tues August 14th commencing 1400 ending 1400 Wed Aug 15th
These tests are to gauge public reaction to this technology and RTÉ regrets
any inconvenience to listeners. After these tests RTÉ will review the
results. It is important to stress that RTÉ has, as yet, no plans for a DRM
launch.

Couldn't hear it here as I don't have a DRM receiver, apparently its awful quality - the bitrate must be only about 11 kbps!
Pity, don't know why they bother, maybe it wil improve later.

Thanks for update, Sal. Was able to copy the 'EH' signal for the first time today, 08/17/07. Noticed signal around 0000UT, and it stayed in until about 0100UT. Good 559 signal when at maximum, competing with 'HI' a KHz higher, and about same strength. Freq. stable; dots slightly heavier than 'HI'. Both would fade in and out, but at different times. Rx R-5000, and only heard on 141 ft. LW, ENE. EM50bk. Ed Re: Hifer List update of EH

Hi Sal... I've tried listening for CW but NL. Recently while listening at the top end, I heard HI briefly, then gone. It's not like a few years before when HI was strong and audible all over. Sumpin has changed (I'm in IL).
Say where are U ordering x-tals from and cut to specs?

I copied Medfers EH (511.97 kHz) and HI (510.56 kHz) last night between 0005 and 0015 UTC from our vacation QTH in Raymond, ME (FN43sv). Both were easily copyable by ear on signal peaks, and visible on Spectran deeper into the fades. I sent Sal a Spectran shot of EH from 0009 UTC. The distance to EH is about 216 miles.

I am ordering a (microprocessor surface mount 13.56 MHz type}from digikey it should be easier to rubber down in my VXO. I have an old CB xtal in there now and its holding in ok. I noticed that the 20 meter band has been poor as well as hifer band lately.

Bryan,
Many current ham radio transceivers and communications receivers have coverage down to 30 kHz or so. If you have an older receiver or transceiver for the HF range, it can be quite simple to add an outboard LF converter to translate the VLF/LF bands up to some "shortwave" frequency. There are also old "boat anchor" tube-type military receivers that tune the LF range directly.
I could give you some specific advice if I knew what you were interested in listening to, and what receivers you may already own.
