Hi John....no, EAR remains on 24/7/52 unless it has a problem, which I'll try to fix right away!

JD,

I moved it to .380, plain QRSS3.

Thanks, JA. That ought to do the trick, but if it's possible to still do DFCW at .380, that would also be neat.

22 m WSPR at last

Hi Folks,

Per the usual schedule, I took PVC offline for the weekend listening regime. F very prominent, EH making its steady and consistent appearance, NC and a hint of WSPR. The latter was considerably weaker than anything seen (and missed) last weekend, but I set up WSJT-x anyway, and adjusted receiver tuning. in the last hours, I was rewarded with several instances of EDJ, as follows:

0206 -25 1.0 13.561508 1 WA1EDJ EM83 7 3652
0210 -21 0.6 13.561508 0 WA1EDJ EM83 7 3652

0246 -21 -0.5 13.561509 0 WA1EDJ EM83 7 3652
0250 -19 0.5 13.561509 1 WA1EDJ EM83 7 3652
0258 -26 -0.1 13.561508 0 WA1EDJ EM83 7 3652
0302 -27 -2.0 13.561508 0 WA1EDJ EM83 7 3652
0306 -25 -1.7 13.561509 0 WA1EDJ

Very happy to have copied this modefrom a 22m HiFER.

F was also booming in today, extremely strong and most definitely audible for long periods.

Lowfers WM and EAR

Lowfers WM and EAR continue to come through here in daylight, albeit just noticeable in the case of WM and with some QSB on EAR. Impressive for a 576 km path in summer.

There are several other WSPR HiFER's. VA3ROM, SIW, me and SZX. There was one in TX
K5LVB?? maybe wrong call but in TX. So more to copy!

Bob,

We're just 5 miles or so from Palo Alto, CA, and approximately 600 feet above sea level, on the Eastern side of the Santa-Cruz mountains. This seems to be a good location for listening :-). Beacon PVC, on the other hand, does not seem to reach outward with quite the same success.

Last weekend, at least two other WSPR signals were identified from Spectrum Lab screenshots, but I'd not configured WSJT-x. The chase is on!

Ok Ed, that's pretty good haul for me.
I lived in Sunny Vale and Mountain View for a few years a long time ago.

I use WSJT-x and had some problems getting the WSPR band set up for decodes.
I took my sig gen and set it to about 13.555 400. I adjusted my RX to place that right on the 1500 Hz mark on WSJT-x. So that set the center of the WSPR decode band to 13.555 400. I've found that to work well after a lot of fiddling around.

Now if we could figure out who is F?

WSPR seems to like that 1500 Hz range. When monitoring HiFERs, I have typically arranged for spectrum lab to display 500 to 1000 Hz as this is comfortable in the case where the signals reach audibility.

For parallel monitoring with Spectrum Lab and WSJT, I retuned the receiver VFO downward by 800 Hz, and made a new configuration in spectrum lab to capture the watering hole activity in parallel. It works nicely, even on a very budget level Win 10 laptop.

First ROM* in weeks, one short-hop from SIW, and I imagine EDJ was off until evening because of t-storm risk. (*First ROM with a complete enough WSPR segment to decode, at any rate.)

No sign of SZX here yet from its permanent home...and oddly, no sign of F today in any of the captures I can view from the flash drive. Once again having issues with file transers through the USB port on the notebook mschine, so will hsve to restart hte computer in the morning and re-transfer files afterward.

In non-WSPR at the watering hole, early evening was particularly good, with EH, 7P, NC, EDJ eventually, RY, MTI, and ROM, all fair to good 30 minutes after sunset. A band scan at that point turned up ABBY and K6FRC. But an hour after sunset, it was down to only EH and RY with pipeline signals and 7P fair.

Thanks John! I did catch SZX from EN90 at 980 km a few days ago.

I am seeing RY again. Seems to be maybe 5 Hz below me WSPRing.

F is daily here. I generally QRT for RX from 1800 - 2100 local. Roughly. I plug the antenna back into the TX before bedtime.

I do get occasional appearances of NC around local sunset. Short hop.

I'll try to post some captures today....Do have to appear to be doing some work here...

Pleased to report EDJ was the first signal heard when I got to the field at 9:30 AM CDT, and brightly visible too. No decodes until after 10:30, though, when I finally completed my band scans, set up the battery charging, and finished other maintenance. Just before I got WSPR-X cranked up, I had a good visual sighting of SIW WSPR, but that didn't last long enough for a repeat...yet. ROM was also fair at 10:30, but has had significant QSB gaps in the WSPR segments since that time slot.

Still, I am hopeful, because conditions already appear better than yesterday at this time.

At the watering hole, EH and NC were in near collision at 554.500, 7P was just becoming visible, bits of RY QRSS showed up, and MTI was regularly visible and sometimes fair aural copy. A chirpy random ditter was malingering around .300. Also seen or heard this morning...WV, a hint of ABBY, and fair copy of FRC.

No EAR through static at QRSS30, but QRSS60 showed a recognizable trace via timing and tilt characteristics for almost two hours. Not enough individual characters to claim reception of an ID, though. Noise was a little less overwhelmingly constant last night, and most everything had disappeared from the lightning map at daybreak except the long old line of storms stretching across the Southeast, looking a lot like springtime. That's enough to remain a problem at this distance.

Will try again tonight. That'll probably be the last opportunity this week, as we may have t-storms locally the following night.

By late afternoon Tuesday, the band had dwindled down to just RY and EH, with a hint of 7P. After coming in all afternoon at SNRr up to -10 dB, even EDJ WSPR dropped into the -20s and stopped decoding after 2038 UTC. Around 5 PM CDT, the only signals away from the watering hole were WV faintly, NHVT visible wandering around 13558.950, and K6FRC visible and faintly audible.

At 8:43 PM CDT, 20 minutes after sunset, I initiated another band scan, netting TON visually, NHVT at 13559.020, ABBY, and a visual trace of FRC. Returning to the watering hole just after the top of the hour, WA1EDJ reappeared and resumed decoding through the 0222 time slot before fading away again roughly an hour after sunset. In the middle of that span, around 0210 UTC, the whole gang was there for a couple of minutes again before also fading: EH, NC, 7P, both SIWs, EDJ, RY, MTI, and ROM (SIW and ROM WSPR were visible only about half the time slot; too little to decode). Only missing were SZX, WM, and F, who hasn't shown up here in recent days.

Good report John. PVC seems to struggle compared to FRC, but I know the latter has a great mountain-top location. Still, it might be worth checking all the connections again.

Never hurts to check connections periodically, but many factors figure in. This morning, I thought I saw QRSS around where I last saw PVC, but EH and NC were competing to see who could stomp on the signal most effectively. After a few minutes, it gave up and went elsewhere for the rest of the day.

Garry / John;

The WM Lowfer antenna is sagging for unknown reasons, leaving the down wire in the shape of a "J". It's not touching the ground yet but I suspect it has altered the radiation pattern, as well as the tuning. Signal strength on my local receiver is down a little. I have a number of higher priority projects but I hope to correct that before the heat returns next week.

So far, my local 22 m reception has been zip, nada, zero, zilch. Nothing from the U.S. is allowed across the RF border, too!

Anyway, I have been using the K3FEF KiwiSDR in Milford, PA, FN21MH for remote monitoring of my 22m ISM beacon, campsite telemetry and WSPR beacon and also those of several others. Nice to see the congesting of signals in the watering hole. Even with horrid high band propagation these days.

Attached are a 22 m Spectrum Lab single screen grab and 22 m WSPR log for a few hours.

Strike Up the Band!
Posted by John Davis on August 05, 2021 at 05:55:35.

Most unusual evening...a reversal of the usual pattern, wherein most of the "usual suspects" at the watering hole fade away around sunset (sometimes with a brief final hurrah 30 or 45 minutes later, sometimes not), generally leaving only 7P from the West and the two Northeast pipeline stations (EH and RY) to jockey for final honors of the day.

Tonight, the pipeline stations were barely present but most others hung around--and were still going strong over two hours after dark! Even more impressive was the short-hop opening that accompanied the surprising late show, All this despite low solar flux and a quiet magnetic field, so it's unclear why the E-layer should be involved so intensely.

The morning started out quite ordinary. WA1EDJ was the primary WSPRer all day, with a couple K3SIWs and one VA3ROM thrown in for variety. But starting at 2108 UTC, KA9SZX began showing up here for the first time since arriving at its new home! And, K3SIW became a regular for a while too, as if someone flipped a switch overhead at 2248 UTC.

Signals at the watering hole after dark: EH fair, NC good, 7P weak one time only, SIW slant, SZX WSPR+CW+QRSS3 and 6, SIW WSPR+QRSS, EDJ, RY, MTI, sometimes a ghost of ROM, and nice copy of WM including audible CW IDs.

Away from the watering hole, NDB2 was remarkably strong, and WV was fair. ABBY and FRC were present at mid-afternoon but totally absent tonight.

Such good short-hop openings from Illinois are often an indicator other short paths, such as from PBJ and MN, might be open also, but no go tonight.

Just a sampling of the afternoon and evening WSPR spots:

WA1EDJ WSPR was present all night, as was NC. The Southeastern pipeline has returned, at least temporarily! The conditions I reported yesterday evening gradually deteriorated for most stations, but by daybreak everyone was back (except for F remaining AWOL). Woke to find decodes of SIW, SZX and ROM already. No WV or NDB2 so far today, and nobody at all above the watering hole by noon time except the newly-returned YSO.

Hope to post some captures this evening.

F has not reappeared though.....

Same results here yesterday around that same time. The 24 hours of miraculous propagation had passed, evidently. I saw no good reason for it to happen in the first place, solar-terrestrially speaking, and apparently it needed no reason to quit either. Nice while it lasted.

Posted by Mark Garrett on August 08, 2021 at 16:20:51.

Just wanted to stop by and say hello and to test this email as my previous email would be bounced out of this message board.
Currently, SZX is on a Delta loop antenna and I am in the process of building a dedicated 22 meter vertical. As Bill Brown, WB8ELK has reported on these pages, SZX is a modified, ground based Skytracker board. A design that was meant to be ultra lightweight and low power enough to operate off of two solar panels and be flown on a 3' balloon around 27,000 feet, reporting its position and many of the Skytrackers have circumnavigated the world several times. Here is a link to Amateur Logic TV that featured Bill Brown and his Skytracker.

7th and 8th August HiFERs
Posted by Ed Holland on August 09, 2021 at 21:05:26.

Mixed but generally positive listening conditions this weekend. Later afternoon and evening, and earlier morning (Sunday) seemed to be the most fruitful times. Apologies for the rather brief and general nature of this report, but here goes.

Most notably, perhaps was the absence of "F" which seems to have abandoned 22m after it's supernova-like emergence on 22m. Perhaps the mysterious operator achieved his/her objective? We may never know.

EH, NC and EDJ all made good copy at various times, with a proliferation of WSPR decodes from the latter, notably around the UTC hours ~ 0100 to 0200, and 1300 to 1500 as covered by monitoring at PVC. 7P wavered in and out, but also made some overnight appearances before local midnight on the 7th. Nearby to 7P in the watering hole, was a new carrier, perhaps with QRSS keying but not readable at the Spectrum Lab settings deployed.

One other WSPR signal, likely SIW, was observed on the charts but did not decode despite an apparent strength sufficient to do so.

PVCs connections were checked at the signal generator and transmitter end, and some reliability issues found. These were corrected and PVC returned to the air this morning 9 August, ~1700 UTC.

That is a goal to make it more omni. I have been watching the WSPR reporting stations on 20 and while it has great East-West coverage, there is nothing in Florida and Western Canada. I also feel that the Delta Loop is not a good antenna when Lightning is in the area as I lost two HiFer transmitters that were using this antenna and want to get something less prone to lightning induction.
The link is of Bill Brown, WB8ELK showing the Skytracker, the same board I am using but set up for pico balloon operation. The operation here is not using the solar panels and is programed for operation in 22 and 20 meter bands with WISPR, QRSS 6, QRSS 3, and CW. I am impressed on how well it is running and locked on frequency. The downside is the location it is showing up on WSPR is not near my actual QTH. This Skytracker is the first programmed and set up this way and so it may be something Bill can offer for others wanting a small multi mode transmitter. Probably need to come up with a different name for it as this one will be ground based. This setup will eventually spur a project to develop a DF device that can be made portable to recover 20 meter Pico balloons that come down.

HiFER RF back?

Heard a rumor it has been copied in New England on (or around) 13564.3 or .4 in CW mode. Don't know the actual city, but when it first went on in late 2017, the grid was EM96. The operator went by the handle "Finman," yet never posted any contact info. It was heard widely for several months, then ceased to be reported anywhere for the past few years. For now, it's in the Ephemera list, but I'll move it to the regular HiFER list if more reports start coming in.

What would be strange is if Dr. Answer Guy DID manage to shed light on anything.

I called him this morning, just on the off chance he could help, but he seemed preoccupied with other matters. When I got done explaining what we were wanting to know, he asked me "Who is it we're talking about, now?"

I replied, "F, the mystery beacon."

He said that was his philosophy too, and changed the subject.

XE2ITY seems to wander quite a bit in frequency between transmissions. I have wspr set for a dial freq of 13.55390 mhz and XIT often wanders out of the wspr passband I have set for other hifer wspr stations. So, I don't catch all the XIT decodes. Had a +6 db decode of XIT at approx 1613km. Kinda seems a tad overpowered but I don't know if US hifer tx power rules apply everywhere else. Btw, caught a few WA1EDJ wspr decodes earlier today... propagation doesn't seem to be too favorable.

linux and wsjt-x
Posted by swlem3 on August 12, 2021 at 19:05:12.

Had a problem crop up after updating linux Ubuntu. It seems that updates caused wsjt-x (which I run in the wine environment) to cease functioning, throwing error codes. In other words, wsjt-x failed to load. This situation has also caused "gamers" grief since numerous games have been affected by the updates. Doing some 'net searching, I found a work-around that "fixes" the problem. I assume that someone will finally get around to addressing the situation in the Linux community. For now, I run this string at the command line before starting wsjt-x:

export MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=4.5

WSJTX Linux versions
Posted by Andy G0FTD on August 13, 2021 at 13:22:20.

Just for info, WSJTX is available for Linux and the Raspberry Pi,
but the wspr guys don't seem to make it as easy as it could be to get the files.

[1]

On most Linux distro's there should be a copy in the repository.

From the command line you can search for it by using these commands:

sudo apt-cache search wsjt

and you'll probably get the response:

$ wsjtx - WSJT-X - Digital Modes for Weak Signal Communications in Amateur Radio.

So we can see that the package exists as "wsjtx" lower case.

Install it by the command:

sudo apt-get install wsjtx

and then let it do it's stuff.

[2] Depending upon your Linux distro, there's often some kind of "app store" where
you can use a GUI to browser for these programs.

[3] Official and latest wsjtx packages are here -

https://physics.princeton.edu//pulsar/K1JT/wsjtx.html

Usually the only keep the latest files and that usually means having the most upto date
version of your Linux.

[4] I keep a copy of some older versions that should work for any LINUX distro
in the last three or four years. Might be worth trying them and if they install then
great. https://qsl.net/g0ftd/other/linux-x86/

All versions contain WSPR and versions 2.2 upwards are the ones that have the better
wspr decoder engine.

The only other additions in the latest versions are really for FT8 / FST and some other
exotic modes, probably not relevant to any experiments with most Hifer ops.

Hope this helps.

At the command line type sudo synaptic (all lower case).

Thanks Andy. I was aware of the earlier versions in the repositories, but they aren't updated very often. I wanted the later versions because I am interested in decoding FT8 as well as the FST modes. I'm active (rx) on 2200m and use the FST modes for some trans-continental decodes on that band. That's why I download the newer versions outside of the repositories and use wine to run them in linux.

Hi Ray,

All understood.

I can see how it could sometimes be easier to run the latest Windows version of WSJTX
in WINE then the latest Linux version in Linux.

Sounds crazy but when they release the Linux versions, they seem to assume that
you have the VERY latest Linux updates / distros.

For example I have a perfectly good Mint 19.3 set up here, yet the wspr dev team
expects me to upgrade to Mint 20 just to run the latest wsjtx.

(You'll get unmet dependency messages otherwise). That to me is nuts.

Kind regards,

Andy

Iceland 207 kHz - old antenna system removed
Posted by Mike Terry on August 14, 2021 at 10:25:22.

Google Translated:
On August 11, 2021, an old antenna system from AM broadcasting disappeared from the scene again. This time the long wave masts on the southeastern outskirts of Reykjavík, in the Vatnsendi district, were eliminated.

The two masts (they bundled the transmission energy according to the geographic extent of Iceland to the northeast) are said to have been built when radio operations began in 1930.

The transmitter system that was last used is a bit more recent and is also shown in a relevant article. It comes from Brown Boveri (Switzerland), had an output of 100 kW and was probably installed between 1950 and 1960.

The operation from Vatnsendi ended in the 1990s. It was replaced in 1997 by the 300 kW strong, now still operated with 100 kW transmitter Gufuskálar near Helissandur, in the far west of Iceland. A 412 meter high mast is used there, which was previously used by the Loran-C (100 kHz) navigation system, which was shut down here in 1994.

This move was associated with a frequency change. Instead of the old Reykjavík channel 207 kHz, the transmitter Gufuskálar operates on the frequency 189 kHz, as the only station in the world on this frequency.

A single wave operation once ran on 207 kHz – which was also the reason for the frequency change: The Eiđar transmitter worked in conjunction with Reykjavík-Vatnsendi, in the east of Iceland near Egilsstađir.

Andy, I suppose that the wsjtx team doesn't have the time to devote to tying up every "loose end" for the linux platform, and so we just do the best we can on our end. I'm nowhere near proficient at linux, and had trouble trying to install the latest wsjtx directly into linux. I just found it easier (for me) to run it in WINE. Perhaps when I take more time to learn linux, I can do it the right way. I'm always concerned that I'll wreck my Linux install by doing something wrong (I have previously), and then have to start over from square one.

Have a good weekend Andy and 73

Quite nice, Andy. All sorts of folks show up there...from high to low I see: EH briefly around 1616, NC's square wave most of the time, SIW slant mode (the seeming flat line with the occasional kink), snippets of SZX, K3SIW WSPR+QRSS, WA1EDJ QRSS, VA3ROM, and WM. Pretty thorough collection.

Hi Folks,

Today, along with 7P, EH and NC, Station PVC was successful in decoding 8 to 9 instances of the SIW WSPR signal, around 2000 UTC, and a single instance at 2300 UTC.

More details later on the day's monitoring.

TNX Ed. I'm distinctly seeing NC up at 555 450, above USC. I went back an checked DJJ grabber on the QRSS compendium and older grabs show both distinctly separate.

I do hope Pat is back too. I visited him a year or so back and saw the USC TX.
He was not sure it was working at that time due to antenna issues.

I'd post my screen capture but a JPEG comes out too big to post. ARGO captures work though. If I had a way to compress a JPEG into a smaller file I'd try it.
I'm sure there is something out there to do that!

I'm going to look at my RX tonight and see if I can catch him in EM83du.

Wow. At 1550 UTC, USC was the strongest of the seven signals visible on the band! (See attachment.) Half an hour later, everybody else had come up in level except WM. Maybe a very faint trace of "F the mystery beacon," which could be a significant clue as to its location, given its relative strength at other sites.

The quiet was too good to last. It's in your neighbor's yard, Ray, or else he's discovered a new power source!

I had begun to suspect from the call sign that it might be the final initial of He Who Must Not Be Named, the bane of 630 meters. But that would not be consistent with a dearth of signal in Ottawa...unless F is now using a highly directional array.

SAQ Reports “an Incredible Number” of Listeners for July 4 Transmissio
Posted by Mike Terry on August 20, 2021 at 19:00:16.

[Excerpted by Moderator] (See Posting Guidelines)

August 8, 2021

The Alexander Grimeton Friendship Association reports “an incredible number” of listener reports — 524 in all — for its July 4 Alexanderson Day transmissions from SAQ, the Alexanderson alternator very-low-frequency (VLF) station in Sweden. SAQ transmits on 17.2 kHz.

“The weather on Alexanderson Day was sunny, with temperatures around 25 °C. Some approaching thunderstorms could be seen on the horizon,” the report said.

Amateur station SK6SAQ "reached 169 QSOs with 21 countries, mostly in Europe and a few from the US.”

Jay Rusgrove, W1VD, in Burlington, CT, was among the US listeners who submitted a report. “The first transmission was a washout due to high QRN,” he recounted. “The second transmission had somewhat lower QRN levels. Reception was not as good as some years’ summer transmissions, which turn out to be unexpectedly good.”

Interesting experiment, Andy. Stacking helps most if one can match the repetition rate of the signal, of course. The ten minute periodicity of SIW and ROM make them really stand out, for instance, as does the alternating 10 minute match of EDJ. And MTI, whom I didn't notice before, now stands out at the top of each minute.

SZX moved to new antenna
Posted by Mark Garrett on August 23, 2021 at 22:05:10.

Today I moved the SZX HiFer to a ground mounted 22 meter antenna. I am hoping to have a more omni pattern and some increased lightning protection. I am hoping it will perform well but if not I will move it back to the Delta loop. Will keep an eye on this page for comments and any performance change you note.

I did not see much last night in general activity. F did show back up - strong.

Hi Bob,

KA9SZX on WSPR and also CW, QRSS3 and QRSS6 (SZX) is currently around 13555.410. I've been listening to it via a UTAH KiwiSDR and had good copy on KA9SZX, WA1EDJ and K3SIW on WSPR and other modes today. - Bill WB8ELK

Thanks for the mention of FST4W decodes from IUV, that's a good distance for you to copy him, especially through QRN.
Looks like I may have to set up my rx for FST4W besides wspr2 J.B. I've been rx'ing XND on 2200m but haven't checked for other modes being used.

Caught P around 1545 UTC Thursday here in SE Kansas on 13555.000 kHz. Seemed to have erratic spacing of IDs, or else might have been undergoing random and frequent deep fades...but nobody else had that problem at the time. As for who or where, I'm afraid that's another of those "F the mystery beacon" situations. Typically it's on for a short while every summer until the op gets his jollies, then goes away again for months at a time, leaving baffled listeners feeling used and unfulfilled.

My results were very different. Amazing how positionally dependent the WSPR stations are. I haven't seen SZX in quite some time but WA1EDJ, K3SIW, and XE2ITY were regulars here today...when the latter bothered to be inside the WSPR2 decode bandwidth, anyway. Saw VA3ROM a few times, but never complete enough transmissions to decode; always rather long gaps in the signal.

As for SZX, Macomb IL is much closer to me than either SIW or WM, so I seldom expect to see it anyway--only under really exceptional short-hop conditions. I thought I saw it briefly early yesterday afternoon, but "F the mystery beacon" stomped it. (No sign of the latter today, but XE2ITY landed on the spot several times, as if to add insult to injury.)

Here are a couple files of yesterday's P reception. While it's clear from the MP3 clip that there were wild fluctuations in level that may have caused one or more IDs to be missed at the receive end, it's also clear from the timing of those which remain that the spacing of IDs is highly variable, even though the timing of individual elements of each "P" seems nicely consistent.

The recording begins in the middle of the first dash of a strong "P" a few seconds before 1549 UTC and ends 60 seconds later. Two weaker IDs commence at 11 and 18 seconds in, then there's an ear-blaster at :28, then two more barely audible specimens at 39 and 57 seconds.

Hifer LCSC
Posted by Pat Bunn on August 27, 2021 at 22:52:59.

I just put a new Hifer on this afternoon - LCSC (low Country South Caroline. The antenna is a dipole up about 50 feet at the high end and about 45 feet at the low end.

The frequency measures 13.555618 and shifts about 4 Hz when keyed, It is located about 200 yards from the Atlantic ocean in the town of Edisto Beach, SC and points NE - SW, pointing NE at about 28 degrees. I put the antenna up today and had a bad feedline connector so had to rig up a temporary solution that I think will be OK until I get back down here in a few weeks.

Reports would be appreciated

Had a much better day with wspr2 hifers. Looks like Bob had most of the propagation here. Edited out all XE2's, so this is the stateside effort. Files are not dated because decodes were copied out of the wsjtx program field instead of the "all_text" file. Regardless, these are today's decodes... Aug 27, 2021.

Saturday 28th Hifers
Posted by Ed Holland on August 29, 2021 at 16:44:05.

Quick report on the Weekend monitoring so far:

SIW recorded in WSPR and QRSS

SZX via WSPR

Non confirmed, but likely a snippet of the new USC FSK

NC.

EH, seemingly via it's usual steady pipeline

WSPRS were received around 1500 to 1600 hours PDT

Conditions were a bit choppy, but overall some good pickings. At times there were two or three signals overlaid, including NC which made it harder to disambiguate for an ID.

More later

Cheers

Ed

Thanks Ed and others for wspr and QRSS reports on hifer K3SIW. Interesting how wildly the wspr SNR varies in just 10 minutes. If the transmission rate was 100% (no QRSS) the variation would be less but my copies of other signals show it's still often suprisingly significant. The MUCH slower slash code signal up about 35 Hz is matched in power level and summed to the same vertical antenna.

SIW appeared again yesterday, although I saw the most decodes by far from EDJ

At least propagation is getting more interesting again.

Thanks Ray! Love to see your reports. I'm seeing EDJ well on the WA5DJJ grabber this morning too. I occasionally see something up around .555 580 - 600 that looks like FSK but not really. I have not seen Pat's new LSC beacon yet. His USC beacon was doing well into DJJ grabber a week or so ago. Have not seen lately.

Sunday HiFERs in KS

Now, the late news...Normans invade England. Film in 850 years.

Not especially good conditions here; no WSPRs and few other regulars. Starting just before 1530 UTC, the watering hole featured (from top to bottom) EH, 7P, NC and ROM. EH eventually faded out, and then also switched off at some point, because I both heard and saw its sudden return at 1540 + :30, initially below 7P in frequency, but drifting upward over several minutes. 7P and ROM became increasingly fragmentary over time. MTI showed up during the noon hour, then left again. During the hot part of the afternoon, EH hovered around 13555.520, while NC drifted down below .430 for a time. For a while in mid afternoon, a steady flat line appeared where I'd expect to see SIW slant, but it carried no modulation and faded away by 2000.

Away from the watering hole, WV was faintly visible on 13554.100 at 1530, ABBY was visible and partially audible, and at 13564.590 there was an unknown signal that I couldn't quite hear but appeared to have a badly tilted dash after some number of IDs. Wondering if perhaps that's the return of beacon RF from "Finman" in the EM96 vicinity? Also saw it around the same time last Wednesday morning, but it seems to always be gone by noon.

By late afternoon Sunday, nearly everyone was gone, but K6FRC was gradually improving by 2230, when I quite for the day with storms approaching.

Not to speak for Pat but my understanding is LSC is in addition to USC. USC in in Spartanburg, SC and LSC is down by the coast.
Pat can fill in the details. Have not seen USC showing up on DJJ lately.

What's this ... hifer band
Posted by swlem3 on August 31, 2021 at 22:44:13.

I keep seeing this trace at '590 and am wondering if it's just "crud" (most likely) or if it's a hifer. Anyone else see this?

www.dropbox.com/s/kxw4vswv1fbvn1t/590.jpg?dl=0

I checked the freq on the hifer list and can't match it with anything on the list near that freq.
