Predicted signal on 22.3 kHz again received!

I received on October 2nd, 2004 between 10 UTC and 11 UTC again as predicted the testsignal of the unidentified transmitter on 22300 Hertz. Although there is much noise on the spectrogram the signal is clearly visible. As at earlier times also carriers were transmitted.

I learned yesterday that Larry Kayser, VA3LK, passed away suddenly on October 5. Besides being a friend of 30 years, Larry will be remembered for, among other noteworthy accomplishments, having made the first transatlantic contact on 137 kHz, with G3AQC in 2001.

NRC on 1710.7 kHz

Heard NRC on 1710.7 KHz with Sony ICF-2010 on Saturday October 9, 2004 11:30 Eastern Daylight Time. Used Radio Shack AM loop antenna. Location: Lansdale, PA.
I was also was catching the pirate station Lubavitcher Radio on 1710. These guys have been on for about 3 years now from Brooklyn, NY. STRONG (SIO 343) signal.
Is anybody else familiar with NRC on 1710.7?

Hearing the NRC Morse code station here in Winnipeg MB on my Drake R8 and 155 foot long wire. Seems to be 13 sweep type noises or tones before each sending of NRC.
I can hear bits of music and talk under it but cannot make anything out.

Canadian Navtex testing on 490 kHz

Tonight (Oct 12th), I heard Yarmouth testing on 490 kHz with a French weather broadcast. 3 stations (Yarmouth, Sydney & Sept-Iles) will be testing until 2005-01-01, when they will transfer their French broadcasts from 518 kHz to 490 kHz. Iqaluit has been on 490 kHz in French for some time now. Updated Navtex list is at http://home.cogeco.ca/~dxinfo/navtex.htm

Hi William,
You have some great gear! That NRD RX is a great radio. I wish I had one. Some day maybe. as for me I am using my plain jane ham rig ft-840 and experimenting with matching coils and BCB filters. It sure makes a difference on my RX to have the BCB filter. THe low bands really came alive when I put that in. Now to find the neighbor who has a nasty light dimmer!hi hi. Well tnx for your reply and good DX...73s Scott
New UK LF Allocation?
Posted by Keith, Ottawa on October 16, 2004 at 08:42:57
From the Radio Society of Great Britain web-page:
The RSGB has made a proposal for radio amateurs in the UK to have access to frequencies between 501 and 504, or 508 and 515kHz, at a transmit level of 10W EIRP. The allocation, if accepted, would extend amateurs’ experimental work on other low and medium frequencies and thus aid understanding of propagation in those parts of the spectrum. The two frequency band options are proposed as they are no longer used for maritime telegraphy in the Western hemisphere and their usage for non-directional aeronautical beacons is being phased out. It is understood that it is unlikely, in the near future, that the channels will be re-allocated to another service.

Hi Keith, we ain't got it yet this is only a proposal to the regulation authority...which has just had a massive upheaval and has all new staff ....at least new to radio!! So I dunno how long we will have to wait for an answer. This has been brewing for some time but data had to be collected and other National bodies sounded. I think we are playing this very steady, we dont want to spook anyone too early. There are some "political" problems even in Europe. We can but hope !

Path US / Europe on HiFer band still open in Autumn...

Hello DXers...
Even in Autumn there is still a DX path between US and Europe for 13 Mhz HiFers. This evening (Oct.18 2004) I did capture the LP triangle wave without any problem and there where also some traces around 13.555,325 MHz where the GA en GG brothers are located usualy. LP was visible since 18h05 UTC and a bit later the signals around 13.555,325 became visible... I'll let you know if I see more HiFers this week here in The Netherlands JO33KH. I did QRT my NL hifer while I'm listening !!!.

Hello Beacon DXers,
I was monitoring the 22 meter band since Oct.18th 2004 and there where several traces visible, but not as strong as during the summer months (june / July). It was not possible to identify all traces... The triangle wave of LP was almost dayly visible and tonight there was a "new duck in the hole" (dutch saying :-) If i'm right you call him 'The Worm' on 13.555,510 MHz with a kind of shark fin pattern. This is WA is'nt it ?
Spectogram screenshots of LP and WA are published on my website on http://hifer-nl.8k.com/received.htm
If you like to monitor especialy your frequency, let me know...

Beacon "M" on 1708.3 kHz
Posted by Tony Straka on October 23, 2004 at 21:51:40
There is another MEDfer (?) beacon out there; this time it is on 1708.3 kHz with the Morse I.D. of "M." I am in Lansdale, Pennsylvania & hear it loud & clear, even through the pirate station on 1710 kHz (Lubavitcher Radio in Brooklyn, NY).
Is anybody else hearing this & if so, is this a MEDfer or is this another experimental beacon like NRC (my prior post from 2 weeks ago).
Thanks in advance,
Tony Straka
13512 khz beacon? Little low for HiFer, No?

I am hearing a beacon on 13512khz
It is in CW about 1 beep per second, maybe a little quicker...
Or maybe it is a "T" or an "E" ?!?!!?
Has anyone else heard this thing or can anyone ID/lay claim to it?
It is a bit south of the ol' HiFer band.

Hi Steve that is interesting. If you look at Steve Dove's plot of DCF39 there were two quite high peaks above the "average level". Even stranger if you disregard these peaks the level ramped slowly up from 2200z to about 0500z, Brian's CT1DRP shows a somewhat similar plot. Could be the absorption was decaying quite rapidly. Maybe tonight will be better !!

Re: LF

Ron,
In that frequency range, you should be able to copy BRO in Duluth, MN. He is currently operating on 182.200 kHz with a mixture of formats, one of which is QRSS30.
Much of the other 160-190 kHz stuff is seasonal, and should be starting up shortly. Look at the beacon lists on this site for more information.
There is some higher power licensed experimental stuff going on in the 137 kHz range as well, and the beacon list should give you the necessary info. Hint: If the list shows a web site for a station, check that out to determine the schedule and frequency.

VLF Up Converter Comments and Questions
Posted by Jim on October 31, 2004 at 11:08:42
I have searched the web looking for a good VLF up converter and came to the following conclusions:
1. The Palomar converter is not a good choice.
2. There was a converter article that was published by "Burhans Electronics" but I cannot find any info on it.
3. There is a design by KF5CQ but cannot find anyone that has built one and commented on it.
4. There is a company called North County Radio that sells a kit called LFCON and again cannot find anyone that has built this and commented on it.
5. I saw a product from LF Engineering that uses a SBL-1 mixer, where the KF5CQ design uses a SBL-3 mixer
Does anyone on the group have any experience with the LFCON?
I would also appreciate any info on experiences with the above mentioned VLF up converters or any other up converters.
Thanks
