I quote from an excellent article in the Irish Independent today : "The arguments for the closure of 252 are entirely spurious. The idea that longwave transmission is of an inferior quality to digital relates to a long-outmoded technology. New 'DRM (digital radio mondial)' radios are now available for a modest cost, which enable longwave signals to be received to near-FM quality. Longwave is 15 times as cost-efficient as FM - and 60 times as efficient as DAB. The 252 channel currently covers most of the UK and much of continental Europe in a manner that meets the needs of the diaspora without any additional investment." - See more at: http://www.independent.ie/.../rtes-all-too-blunt-message...

Algeria on 252
Posted by Mike Terry on October 01, 2014 at 07:19:19.

No sign of this station returning, despite RTE vacating the frequency on 27 October. I quote: "The Tipaza long wave transmitter in Algeria was established in the 1970s and is understood to have a 1,500 kilowatt Tesla transmitter made in the former Czechoslovakia. The station uses the frequency 252 kHz long wave and carries Chaine 2 of the state broadcaster, Télédiffusion d’Algérie, and to avoid interaction with RTE Radio 1 in Ireland on the same frequency, reduces its power to 750 kilowatts at night. The transmitter mast is 355 metres high and is one of the tallest structures in Africa. It recently had to be refurbished due to sea erosion and earthquake damage. The transmitter is now nearing the end of its service life, although it has had some refurbishment, and recently has been silent after a period where it frequently drifted off frequency." http://goodbyeam.wordpress.com/2014/02/20/tipaza/

RTÉ News

RTÉ has been urged to reconsider its decision to shut down its longwave radio service at the end of the month.

In a statement, Ireland’s Catholic bishops said the loss of the service would mean fewer people would be able to listen to religious programmes.

They expressed concern that people living in rural areas and in Northern Ireland and the UK will be worst affected.

RTÉ said last week that only 2% of listeners to RTÉ radio did so on longwave.

However, the bishops said that serving a marginal audience should be a priority for the national public service broadcaster.

They called on RTÉ to carry out a survey to determine the actual number of listeners to longwave broadcasts of religious programmes and how prepared those listeners are for a digital switchover.

Irish Post
3 October 2014
By James Martin

Ireland's state broadcaster is to stop transmitting its 252 longwave service at the end of the month severing what some feel is the only link to home for many elderly Irish in Britain.

Responding to the news, Liverpool-based Tony Birtill said that longwave plays “a big part” in elderly people’s lives among the Irish community in his area.

“If you go around to a lot of houses in Liverpool, they’ll have it on permanently to 252,” he said. “Many such people live alone and RTÉ 1 on long wave is a very important means for them to stay in touch with Ireland, and the outside world generally.”

Mr Birtill, who is author of Hidden History: Irish in Liverpool, added that he had spoken to “half a dozen” people who were concerned about it over the past week alone.

“RTÉ feign interest in older Irish people in this country,” the 60-year-old added.

His sentiments were echoed by campaigner Enda O’Kane, who worked in technical information and as an engineer at RTÉ for four decades since 1961.

Dublin-based O’Kane accused the state broadcaster of “focusing on the island of Ireland only” and “ignoring the Diaspora”.

He said the move would particularly hit the ’50s wave of Irish emigrants in Britain, adding: “It’s sad for many people who will be discommoded — the poor, in particular, and those who haven’t got broadband or can’t afford a satellite dish. So it’s anti-democratic in many ways.”

Tom McGuire, Head of RTÉ Radio 1 (said): “(O)ver the last 10 years, listenership of RTÉ on longwave has dropped considerably. We estimate that no more than 2,000 listeners in total avail of our longwave service — and that’s in Ireland and Britain.

“Earlier this year, due to technical problems, longwave RTÉ was off air for the whole of a Sunday. We only had seven complaints. With RTÉ now available on other platforms, including satellite, and with our FM service having improved dramatically, there is little argument for keeping the longwave service going.”

RTÉ Radio 1 is available in Britain on satellite TV service Freesat. It is also available on the RTÉ Radio Player and mobile apps.

Hi Joe,

I listened last night for VO1NA but it was too noisy to copy much. I did see your signal and it peaked around 0600Z well enough to make out "1NA" on ARGO at QRSS120. Mike, WA3TTS and I have monitored 137.777 kHz within the last few days and done better. But things are looking up compared to the middle of summer so full callsign copy shouldn't be far away.

Copy was better last night despite storms to the SE. Will post a screencapture to http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/lowfer/2014-October/date.html. Interesting how rapidly the signal can go from bright on the ARGO waterfall into the noise. Also interesting how copy of MP at about the same heading isn't very correlated with the more distant VO1NA. Receive setup was an eprobe and sdr-iq.

Irish Post
By James Martin
October 9, 2014
excerpt:

With fewer than three weeks to go until RTÉ Radio 1 brings its historic longwave service on 252 to an end, the Irish community in Britain has responded with fury and dismay.

The move, which was announced with just over a month’s notice, is part of the Irish broadcaster’s new focus on digital platforms.

But the decision to cease transmission, from October 27, was described as a “bitter blow” to Irish people in Britain as well as parts of the North of Ireland.

Eddie Walsh, who is PRO of The Workers’ Party (Britain) in Nottingham, said: “Other options are not open to all of us. I cannot get RTÉ on my car radio except on longwave and I certainly do not want to listen to it on my computer. The current radio ads only refer to the island of Ireland, thus not even mentioning those of us on this side of the Irish Sea.”

He added: “I would suggest that the station has underestimated the number of listeners.”

Meanwhile Irish Post reader Sean O’Rinn said: “I have a small radio beside my bed and listen to RTE on 252 every night. There is no way that I can use any digital apparatus in its place. There must be thousands of Irish people here in England who are in a similar position — we will become completely isolated from our native home.”

The loss of the longwave service comes after the broadcaster closed its London offices in 2012. Tom McGuire, Head of RTÉ Radio 1, estimates that no more than 2,000 people use its service.

The Irish News
13 October 2014
excerpt:

Opinion: Move should be postponed until elderly emigrants have other options

The shutdown, announced with only one month’s notice, is scheduled to take place on October 27th. The news is unlikely to cause a stir in Ireland. RTÉ says 98 per cent of its listeners have other options. Most of us used to spending our days online could be forgiven for wondering why on earth this technology wasn’t mothballed years ago.

Who will be affected? The Irish in the UK, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, will have a vital link with home permanently severed. This is a group that is unlikely to protest. Many won’t even know they’re about to lose their radio service until the day they go to turn it on and it’s not there.

RTÉ has been broadcasting Radio 1 to Britain since 1932. Older people rely on it as a valuable link with a country they left years ago; for many, it is their last link with Ireland.

RTÉ’s digital radio alternative, DAB, has no reach in either Britain or the North. Longwave is not perfect: it’s unusable at night, when its signal is overpowered by an Algerian station sharing the same channel. But it keeps people connected during the day, and many people use it to listen to GAA matches from home.

Six years ago, I was among those who campaigned against RTÉ’s move to shut down medium-wave radio, which also served the Irish community in the UK, because it would adversely affect the emigrants of the 1950s and 1960s.

That generation sent home millions of pounds in remittances and were, in return, largely forgotten by Ireland.

Ireland began to step up its commitment to Irish emigrants and the diaspora. The appointment of Jimmy Deenihan as Minister of State for the Diaspora is the latest in a series of positive steps. There are blind spots, however. It would cost little to continue the service for a few more years, until digital forms of broadcasting become a viable alternative for our oldest citizens. We’re just not there yet.

RTÉ, which turned a pre-tax profit last year of more than €1 million, hasn’t said how much it will save by shutting down the service. The main savings will likely be in power costs. RTÉ has refused an FOI request to reveal those, but a reasonable estimate would suggest the electricity to run the transmitter costs about €150,000 per year.

As for how many people are affected, the facts are unclear. The Irish community in Britain number over 400,000 first-generation Irish alone. They come from a country where more than 80 per cent of people are daily radio listeners. But RTÉ doesn’t count its overseas audience, so we just don’t know.

This move should be postponed until there are better options that will suit all the Irish in Britain.

RTÉ postpones closure of long wave radio service to 19 January
Posted by Mike Terry on October 15, 2014 at 14:11:54.

RTÉ News
15 October 2014

RTÉ is postponing the closure of its long wave radio transmitter, the Managing Director of RTÉ Radio has told the Joint Committee on Transport and Communications.

Jim Jennings said what was evident was that more time was needed to engage with groups affected.

The closure has been postponed to 19 January 2015.

RTÉ had previously announced that it would be ceasing its service from the Clarkstown long wave transmitter on 27 October and migrating its Radio One service to digital platforms.

Mr Jennings said the decision to cease any RTÉ public service is not something that RTÉ takes lightly or without serious consideration.

He said: "We know that such decisions affect audiences who enjoy and rely on RTÉ's services.

"However, we also know that the public expect us to manage our operations and services efficiently and evolve our services as technology changes and audiences adapt.
"In balancing these broad considerations we have come to the decision that now is the right time to cease our long wave Radio One service after ten years on air."

Mr Jennings said an RTÉ delegation will travel to the UK next week to meet organisations and see if there is a better solution to the long wave issue.

He said RTÉ is doing all it can to engage with community groups.

RTÉ accepts that the window given for closure was too short and a longer window was needed, he added.

Separately, RTÉ News has announced that it is to appoint a new London Correspondent.

RTÉ News and Current Affairs Managing Director Kevin Bakhurst said it would be a smaller operation than before, but "would continue to provide the same high quality of coverage expected by the public of RTÉ News".

Mr Bakhurst said the appointment "has been in our plans for some time, but has been curtailed by the ongoing financial restraints facing RTÉ".

"Thanks to significant savings in closing our old office over the last two years as well as redeploying the staffing costs of the Europe Correspondent post we are now in a position to make an appointment."

The post will be advertised internally in the coming weeks.

G'Day all. MTI on ~13557.5 KHzis coming in at this time, 2140 UT, very well, in the 4-4/5-9 range, better than has been heard for some time. The only other station heard is GNK on ~13564 KHz, only about 2-3/4-9. Both station show QSB with GNK disappearing for periods, and MTI dipping down to just above the background noise. I checked the signals because I saw a small sun disc and spot image coming through the blinds, projected upon the side of a ladder. With a white card it definitely showed as a big sunspot on the sun's disc. A check of the Solar site did note a very large spot(AR2192?) with R-3 blackout flare did exist. Usually MTI is too close for such a good signal and GNK is much stronger. Ed WSlidell, LA EM50cg

The imminent closure of the Irish public broadcaster’s longwave service we reported last week has been postponed until January 19, 2015. ... The Managing Director of RTÉ Radio Jim Jennings plans to travel to the UK to meet with community groups affected by the loss of service to see what other solutions might be found for them. ... The outcry over the closure was greater than expected, but Jennings says the longwave service is still set to be shuttered. ... listeners in cars, older audiences and those without reliable home internet are left out as these services sunset. It will be interesting to learn what results from Jennings’ discussions with the UK-based community groups. Will he convince them to take up internet listening, or will there be a creative third-way solution?

Hey,

Nice to hear that 252 will still be up for a while longer .I took a dxpedition to Salisbury Beach, MA last night and laid out 500 ft of low wire in a VERY quiet location on Icom R-71a. But longwave was virtually blacked out: 252 had Algeria (NOT IRELAND !) fair to weak , after time it faded out. A few of the big guns ( 162, etc) were BARELY there. I DID weakly grab one of the 630 M experimental beacons but didn't see it on the list.Call and frq didn't make sense ( WG2XS on 484 Kc). FRQ was correct but call sign might be in question.Other LW stuff ( WWVB, and some of the usual data stations ) were in there. NAVTEX good on 518, 530 to 1710 Kc in good shape.

I'll try to get back up on the horse again at least one more time.

While this is a deferral of closure, hopefully the time used will be used to find a solution to serve a predominantly mature audience in the UK who dont have Internet, DAB, Satellite, or Cable access to RTE.
While Long Wave is imperfect it does provide a service to the Northern part of Ireland where FM is unavailable, and to most of Britain and even northern areas of mainland europe, and it does this from a single transmitter for a much lower cost that a FM/DAM network.
Some changes could be made to improve the service, like raising the power, maybe when some other long wave services from german shutdown, RTE could move frequency to avoid conflicting with the Algerian Signal, longer term, DRM on LW or MW needs to be considered as a digital platform to deliver long distances, but hardware needs to be available, particularly amongst the demographic who use the service at the moment.
But until there is a viable service in the North and Britain then LW 252 should be kept going.
