3927 Khz Saturday NET
Posted by Jerry Parker on October 02, 2017 at 15:51:11.

Hi Everyone.

Was on frequency at 0755 California time only to find a foreign broadcast at 30 over S9, ugh.

0800 they dropped off the air, YES!

Clint KA7OEI long time LOWFER ('C' Beacon) joined us. Nice to have you with us Clint. Clint has some really good info on his website http://ka7oei.com/.
Look forward to having you join us again Clint, thanks.

Sent out a QRZ and Robert KBZQXM stepped up with a really good signal even though he had to use his tuner to convince his transmitter to get the RF to his antenna.

Well, we are growing and hopefully all of you who can will join the round table next Saturday at 0800 California time on 3927 Khz.

At my QTH with 40 acres to work with I am considering putting down a couple of BOB's (beverage on the ground antennas) to augment my active whips. I contemplate the first one to be oriented somewhat N/S so I will be looking at Dave Curry's signal for comparisons from this Creston QTH.

Any ideas please chime in.

73's for now,,,hopefully see you next Saturday at 0800 California time on 3927 Khz,

Jerry, I tried one for a while. It was about 800 Ft long 3 Ft above ground. My Deer population made it a high maintenance item. I was happier with a PA0RDT mini whip. The critters haven't knocked it down yet!

Google Bob Sutton, ZL1RS for pics and info of a successful installation.

BEACON MLS
Posted by Mark on October 04, 2017 at 17:23:38.

Hi all !
I plan on activating BEACON MLS on 186.204 KHz soon. As before it will be using QRSS30 mode. I'm waiting on the first cold frosty day. I'll keep you posted.
Also, I submitted my info for operation on the new 630 meter Band on Sept 23. My antenna is a 30 foot vertical with a large coil and cap hat rods at the top and a tuning box from an old military BC375 at the bottom. I then ran 60 ground radials and the antenna tuned with a SWR of 1.3 to 1. My transmitter is CW only, crystal controlled on 473.100 KHz running about 50 Watts output for now. I will adjust output to maintain the 5 Watt ERP level after I do measurements. I guess the magic day for me will be Oct 23 which will be the end of the 30 day wait period. On Oct 23 at 7:00 PM EST I will be sending short test transmissions to my Ham buddies who range from 4 to 30 miles distance. They will help evaluate my signal for strength and purity. Oh yes, my Ham call is AC8CL. If you receive my signals, please post a message. I also have a R390 receiver set up with a converter for reception. Thanks.... Mark AC8CL

ALL;

I have re-started the WM Lowfer beacon on 185300.5 Hz. It is currently sending the WM graphic followed by FSKCW at QRSS30 speed. Several changes to the antenna system have been incorporated in the beacon.

I too have submitted my info to the UTC the evening of Sept 15th. I plan to put a machine on the air in a couple weeks transmitting WSPR into an Ashlock Loop.

I have several questions, Mike -
Which band are you going to run the Ashlock Loop on, and what are the perimeter and materials you used to construct it?

Also, what does your final look like? Are you using a ckt. similar to the bipolar Lowfer finals published by Kohler (and similar by several others), or are you using FETs in a Class-D/Class-E arrangement with a closer resemblance to the designs published in the last 10 years for use on HF?

Thanks

Loaded Bases tonight
Posted by Bill Hensel on October 06, 2017 at 01:01:42.

Caught Three Hifers tonight...this hasn't happened in a good while.

GNK Q5 0035 utc

K6FRC Q4 0042 utc

AZ Q3 0047 utc
It took a little while to catch AZ, I kept dialing back on the Freq. and could hear some type of ID but could not make it out, then finally AZ started fading up and I would catch 3-4 ids in a row then it would fade down then it would come back up for 3-5 ids...

Good to hear GNK skipping into Colorado and of course AZ was a special treat.
Hope other start listening for the Hifers a little more often

Chuck;

I plan to follow the basic guidelines that were published by Bill Ashlock some time ago. He did a lot of work and experimentation on the designs with his WA/WM LowFer beacons. I replicated that loop antenna system here and conducted a few short tests on 1750m. I however am skeptical about the legality of it under the part 15 rules and use the typical flattop vertical.

As I understand the part 97 rules, that type of antenna won't be an issue. The U3S will operate as the exciter on both 2200m and 630m. It has the capability to band switch the PA and loop tuning capacitors as necessary.

The loop I have tested with was constructed with 200 Ft. of Quad Shield RG-6 coax using just the outside braid-shield. I am continuing my hamfest search of longer and larger diameter coax or wire to use in place of the RG-6.

The PA used in the Ashlock design is a slightly modified Kohler bipolar push-pull. I have tested with the PA he built and used on his beacon. I have also built and tested class D and E MOSFET PA's. I need to decide which one will end up in the transmitter box. With the "small" transmitting loop and low power PA, I will be a QRP station.

You can find more information about my current WM beacons and a little history of the Ashlock beacons at wmbeacon.meekfarm.us.

Thanks Bill,

Reading carefully, these are HC49US (small form) crystals in larger packages. As such, the actual active element is available from many places.

I understand that the truly larger package crystals actually have a larger quartz element, and can be more amenable to "pulling" the frequency.

for example

Of course, if you want the FT243 holder, your link is just the ticket :-)

Hi Everyone.

nice turn out on the LowFER NET this morning on 3927 Khz at 0800 California time.

The Japanese broadcast station shut down right at 0800 so we were in the clear with some QSB.

Fun NET this morning with:

Dave Curry WD4PLI (Beacon WH2XVN 183.5 kHZ) from Burbank, CA,

Ed Larsen KI6R (Beacon 6R 186.7kHZ) from Eldorado Hills, CA,

Clint Turner KA7OEI from Utah

W6IZJ Frank Philips in San Gabriel listening

WA6OWR in Creston, CA.

Discussion on what everyone is doing.

Ed and Dave discussed loops they are or will be working on.

I am working on installing a BOG in the ravine next to the shack pointed at Dave Curry's QTH and moving the active whip up on the mesa behind the house to reduce the noise. Receivers are Yaesu FT 747 and new Icom 7300

Ed Larsen mentioned he had the NX beacon on in Morro Bay in the '80es and Clint had the CT beacon in the 80'es too. His Beacon '6R' is on 185.700 Khz 24/7 excluding power failures

Dave talked about several folks back then meeting on SSB in the lowfer band on Saturdays and he is hopeful we can do this on 630 meters in the future. It will be interesting to see the transverter and tranceiver market with the new bands also. Dave has his Part 5 beacon on 186.5 Khz and looks for QSOs on Saturdays.

I believe my Icom 7300 will transmit on the new bands now with the mars mod.

Exciting times with the new low bands, 2200m and 630Khz coming up.

Looking forward to next Saturdays net at 0800 PDT ON 3927kHZ

Please join us if you can,

Don't give up Bill,

The HiFER game is rewarded with patience and fortune. Sometimes I've heard voice transmissions in Spanish right in the ISM allocation. Apparently these are fishermen from South of the border.

I walked our neighborhood, trying to see what my beacon's signal was doing. We're semi-rural, and yet in various places, different blips and beeps were audible every few hundred yards.

PVC was set at 13,558.4 MHz, because that was the best spot I could tune with the crystal I bought. It is used in a repurposed Vectronics 20m QRP transmitter.

The important part is to remember to have fun, keep listening, and experiment once in a while.

Cheers and 73s,

How To Get Started With a HIFER
Posted by Bill, K4JYS on October 08, 2017 at 16:33:53.

Tnx Ed for the encouragement. I realize that the Hifer beacons are at the whim
of propagation (which has been dismal of late) and of course the low power
involved. My amateur radio activities were a bit subdued during the summer
due mostly to the poor band condx....same goes for the beacon chasing.

I hesitate to ask the following questions since this subject has probably been
discussed many times on this list....however, here goes anyway and I apologize
for the length:

Should one want to put on a Hifer beacon (not saying I'm gonna but...) I was
wondering just how to go about it. I would be interested in the CW mode...no
digital. I have read the FCC regs and pretty well understand the main points.
As for a transmitter, I guess there are numerous ways to go....homebrew from scratch, modify an existing QRP rig as you did, buy something ready to go
(haven't seen any of those). From my standpoint, I am not much on solid state,
which I would guess would be the best way to go. I do prefer tubes and do some building of one tube osc. rigs. I have seen mention of some type of IC that has a
QRP xmtr built in with inputs for voltages and keying. I think they can be programed by the vendor when bought. I guess about the only thing to add would be a keyer
and antenna coupling....any comments on any of these methods.

I see that the FCC spec holds the FS to 15,848 microvols at 30 mtrs for freqs of
13.553 to 13.567 mhz. I suppose this is where all Hifers operate since the most
power is allowed in this part of the band. Is there a practical way to measure for
this FS? How does this equate to xmtr input/output?

Is there any coordination of beacon freqs or just fire up where ya want to
or depending on what xtal one might have available?

I will stop with this: how complex were the mods you did to the QRP xmtr?

Thanks for putting up with this. I appreciate any comments.

Thanks/73 de Bill K4JYS

Good Questions Bill.

My setup was simple enough really. Mods to the QRP rig included

1) Adding the 13.56 crystal the second crystal position.
2) Calculating and building an attenuator to take the nominal 1.25 W down to <4 mW.

This is a bit wasteful I suppose, but was the easiest way to get going. The system is keyed using a kit from K1EL. It is fairly easy to program with any Morse message - you can keep several stored in memories.

Antenna is a sloping Dipole on the house roof. Cabling is all 75 ohm TV stuff, with attempts to match appropriately using a balun at the antenna feed and an ATU after the transmitter.

I'm not a licenced amateur - I'm a radio listener, tinkerer and experimenter. The HiFER operation stuff is a real gift.

A little tube osc. rig would be neat - you could use a dual triode or similar to buffer, key and cut down the drive to an allowable O/P level.

Frank and all,
I never received confirmation of receipt for my submissions (three, in all), nor anything since. I suspect there's not much of a 'system' behind that webpage at all, at least not so far. Maybe when they actually get around to processing all those submissions, they'll find/use a loophole in the regulations to deny those which they find problematic...
Only time will tell.

For me, ten more days and I can go on the air. I might even be ready at that point.
I decided against using a down-converter with a dedicated HF rig and PC to modulate it; so I'm building everything from scratch - and running into the usual gremlins encountered when undertaking a complex project of this nature. I seem to have an incurable infatuation with difficulty ;P

Well, I sent my two requests in to UTC, one for each band, two days ago. Mine should be an interesting test since I am located about 1/2 mile from major power lines and about a mile from a substation. Hard to say what criteria UTC will use to "test" our locations. Wondering if it will be location-sensitive and/or frequency-sensitive?? Hard to say but hope all goes well as would like to set up for some new band action (HI).

Located just east of the SF Bay Area. Now it is a waiting game.

The final stage may have been a 6AQ5, obviously good for more than a few mw! I'll look for the drawing later this week. He used a mechanical keyer, motor driven.

However, I noticed a USIC utility locating service truck stop in the road, in front of my house a few minutes ago. I could see the driver typing onto a laptop computer in the passenger seat. When he finished, he drove on down the road.

That is an unusual event here as I am located in pure farm land 5 miles from anything. There is only the routine farm harvest going on around here. Could the UTC possibly be using the utility locating services to validate the information we submitted online???

WH2XND Transmitting on 138.000 KHz
Posted by Ron Douglass NI7J-WH2XND on October 15, 2017 at 00:40:20.

Gentlemen, I have left the new 2200 Meter Amateur band and will continue use of my Experimental Part 5 grant on 138.000 KHz. The proper frequency settings for WSPR are as follows as recommended by John W1TAG. WSPR transmissions will be on 138.000, and your receivers need to be retuned to 136.500 USB.
Also, John strongly suggests that WSJT-X users create another band entry for 136.500. That way, the reported XND frequency to the WSPR database will be correct.

If you leave WSJT-X set up for the stock 136 kHz, and tune their receivers to 136.500, you will be reported as being on 137.500, and other receiving ops may try to look for you there!
It'll only take one guy with the standard 136.000 kHz setup to create this confusion.
Thanks John for the update!

I did visit Ronnie Graham "HI" many years ago when hiking in the area, it was like a trip back in time.
He lived in a little 3 room house heated with a wood stove an old frige, an old wooden stand up radio, old stove (propane , I guess)etc... I don't recall what tube was in the final but it probably ran a couple of watts. he had a mechanical keyer on both his hifer and medfer and lowfer rigs. His lowfer rig had a 6L6 in the PA and ran 20 watts into a long wire, how long I don't know I asked him a few times with no response, (he is hard of hearing). One version of his medfer had 2 xtals with a 6BE6 mixer driving , I think, a 6C4 maybe running a watt or 2.

Weekend Hifers
Posted by ed holland on October 16, 2017 at 16:18:50.

Hi Folks,

Hifer Conditions are showing promise. This weekend, with listening sessions around 4pm (PST +DST) or 00:00Z I was able to catch AZ, and also USC, NC and another FSK signal at the watering hole whom I could not identify, near 13,555.10 MHz (if I recall correctly). This was the best weekend of the season so far. Listening needs a little more time spent to do things justice.

Reception was with the NRD 535 and random dipole as usual, though I have been trying a variety of receivers from the collection, to inject a bit of fun.

Posted by Sal, K1RGO on October 18, 2017 at 15:48:19.

I was surprised when I received an email from the UTC approving my 630 meter operation.
yesterday, so I called a CQ on 474kHz that night with no luck. I thought someone was calling me but the QRN was s9. I heard NO3M I think,(QRN) in QSO with a w9. There was some digital modes going on above 475 kHz also.
I assume I am running about 1 watt ERP for now. I will evaluate ground losses etc.. as the winter season gets started.

Stayed there for about 10 min and then left. Very Interesting. I read about other similar incidents here so thought I should mention it. Lee KE6PCT

Listening USB on 474.2 were the WSPR should be at and I'm not able to decode anything, even though the signal strength is S7. Does anyone know if this is standard WSPR mode, or something different?
Thanks,

USB with a dial frequency of 474.200 should give you results for WSPR-2 decoding.
Make sure you click the correct button to start a receive session.

I made my 1st contact on 630 with NO3M in PA,2 days ago around 2130hrs.
He was 559 and so was I. It was a short QSO since he was having drift problems.
There was lots of QRN but it should improve by winter I would guess.

Are you talking about WSPR Version 2? Refereed to as WSPR 2 ? That's what we are using, but no luck. A friend is also using that and so far both of use are coming up dry for some reason. Need to just be persistent I guess.

If you are using a receiving converter, are you listening on the correct side band? For example (using simple numbers), if the a transmitting station information bandwidth is 500 to 501 KHz, and the converter's local oscillator is 3000 KHz, the converter's output "could" be 3500-3501 KHz. If the transmitting station is 500 to 501 KHz, and the local oscillator is 4000 KHz, the converter output "could" be 3500 to 3499 KHz. Note, the information side band for the 4000 KHz example is reversed if the receiver used USB. 73 Frank K3DZ / WH2XHA

Hi everyone,

great net this morning with Dave WD4PLI, Clint KA7OEI, myself and Mike N8OUU in Illinois listening via WEBsdr KFS.

Dave is working on a commercially available amp modification for the new bands with hopes it will work well there.

Clint brought up his SDR activities and experiments etc.

I mentioned I brought out my old BC221 to calibrate the sdr here with the upverter. Surprised after all these years it still works.

Mike mentioned he is using RG6 for his feed lines on all his antennas for hf and VLF, including his active whip.

You can check Mikes pages here:
http://n8oou.meekfarm.us/index.html

I am working on getting my active whip up on the mesa behind my house fed with RG6.

Good net for us all.

Hope to see you next weekend, Please join us.

You may already have this covered, but in addition to the previous comments your PC needs to be within a second or so of the real time, plus your receive frequency must be stable during the 2 minute transmit window.

Agreed. Keeping accurate time on the PC is essential. On several occasions I've found that failure to decode WSPR signals was resolved by doing an NTP sync.

I'd be very interested to learn what others are doing in terms of GPS or other [non-internet]means of disciplining their PC clock to achieve long-term stability for radio uses. This is particularly important for field-portable setups where a network connection is not readily available.

Nice report Bill,

I listened a little this weekend, but couldn't get to the desk at the right times, so no reports.

PVC was on and off over the weekend. This culminated in quite a bit of servicing - I found a bad contact in the ATU, and then decided to check out the terminal box at the base of the mast that supports the dipole. Sure enough, bad/corroded connections. These were stripped back and remade, then given a shot of battery terminal spray for added protection.

Measuring off the other aerial, the work seems to have restored a few dB.

630M transmitters shaping up, here
Posted by Chuck, N1KGY on October 23, 2017 at 20:30:47.

Ordered today a QRP-Labs U3S for use as an exciter for 136 and 475 Khz for WSPR and other digital modes. 136Khz won't happen for me this season, but 475 certainly can - I have a 190' inverted-L here at the house that I'm going to wind a coil for; and I have a span of well over 100' wide and ~80' high that I'll set up a Marconi Tee antenna out at my rural property.

I've got a downconverter breadboarded and working for 475Khz, which I'll use here at the house, but when I look at the power budget for an HF rig, downconverter, laptop, and MF-PA, it's just not feasible to set all that up at my remote property running on solar power (there's no electric utility on the property), plus the challenge of keeping the laptop clock sync'ed so that WSPR will encode properly.
Also of consideration is the fact that I don't want to put a rather expensive HF rig and laptop in an unattended box, outside in the elements, for an indefinite period - that just sounds too much like "destructive testing" to me. Hi Hi.

After researching what was available, I found that the U3S was the best integrated solution available for a solar-powered WSPR station - RF synthesis, WSPR message encoding, and GPS-sync'ed clock all together drawing less than half an amp, in a package smaller than a paperback book. I'll put it in the same enclosure with the P-P IRF-640 amplifier I've just finished building, and the whole station will only draw about 6 amps on TX. So if my antenna gives me 10% efficiency, I'll get 5W/EIRP - if the antenna efficiency is higher then I'll just trim back the PA output. Yeah, I'm a radio optimist ;P

Assuming a "100 watt" solar panel will give me about 6A/hr * 9 hours (on a good day), or 54AH of power, I should be able to run up to 20% dutycycle without issues using a "35AH" marine battery.

I'll rig up a simple load controller that can disable the system if/when the low-battery threshold is reached, but I don't expect it will need to suspend the load very often. At 15% dutycycle [one TX cycle each 15 minutes] -- which is the most I'd probably run for WSPR -- the beacon should be able to run continuously, even considering the probability of sub-optimal solar output for several days in a row, with poor weather over the winter.

The U3S, with GPS option, including BPFs for 630, 40, and 20 meters, came to a grand total of $75 including shipping. So if it lives up to its published spec's, it's quite a good deal.

Now lets see how long it takes to arrive from the UK.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the reports - Good to know that PVC is struggling out again. Last weekend saw quite a bit of maintenance on the aerial and ATU - must have been worth it.

Lets see if PCO responds this weekend ;-)

UTC Approval Format
Posted by Bob Magill on October 28, 2017 at 14:04:17.

Hello All -- A quick inquiry as to the format of UTC approvals that have been received so far. What I see is that the UTC has been sending approval emails -- is this the norm?? Others been getting emails?? I am about one week out from the 30 day point and have heard nothing so far. Just wondering what to expect. Regards --- Bob K6WL

This mornings LOWfer net
Posted by Jerry Parker on October 28, 2017 at 15:52:02.

Lots of good discussion this morning on active antennas and noise cancelling as well as modifying amplifiers for use on the new amateur bands.

I am scouting a couple of power poles and preparing to build an antenna site on the mesa behind the house.

A good ground system and the antenna suspended between the power poles with a dog house for the beacon in the middle.

Thanks everyone for joining in, see you next week.

Hifer Reports 29 October
Posted by Ed Holland on October 30, 2017 at 02:41:36.

Hi Folks,

Just a quick report from some listening and Spectrum Lab Monitoring today.

Firstly - I am happy to return Bills report of PVC with one for PCO on 13,563.55 kHz. Visible only today, not quite audible, but a positive log of the signal for many copies, around 16:00 PST+DST (0:00 UTC 30th Oct)

Add to this GNK, audible and visible on 13,563.99 kHz, AZ very strongly audible i.e. in the next room on 13,554 kHz.

Add to this two mysteries that sounded like beacons operating CW. One at 13,557 kHz, and another at 13,563.25 which might be KC7MMI, but I could not get sufficient detail to resolve an ID.

I did not get a chance/time to monitor the watering hole today.

Nice to see some action in the HiFER band. Activity was consistent with the mid-late afternoon lifts often seen here.

Best regards,

Ed

I'm past the 30-day notice point and have heard nothing from UTC. This means I should be good to go. I'll be working on the transmitter during the next few weeks.

Same here Ed, it's been 42 days since I submitted, and I've received no response.
My 630M amplifier is ready to go, and I've ordered a QRPlabs U3S to use as an exciter on 630M (it will do 2200M also, but I'm not trying to get on 2200M this season - that's a project for next spring/summer.
I'm a nit-pick about documentation, so I would be a lot more confortable had I received at least a confirmation of my submissions, but I guess that's not how they're running things. I have screen-shots of my submissions, so I guess that will have to be 'good enough'.

LowFER SIW OTA
Posted by Garry K3SIW on October 31, 2017 at 02:18:03.

Had a power problem that impacted 185.185 kHz transmissions while I was out of town. Got to the site today but the needed repair wasn't obvious so I now have the lowfer on my work bench. QRSS30/60 works fine on 185.2993 kHz (thanks for looking Andy) and that's the way it's been running until this afternoon. Hope to get it QRV again soon.

Maybe not such a big deal with the advent of the new MF/LF bands, but when was the last actual LOWFER/LOWFER QSO? Has anybody tried "recently" with any of the digital modes.

Since I am going to be occupied with 630 meters I am going to run SJ by request.
The best times will be after 22:00 local overnight to 9:00 local. SJ is off as of now.
Hopefully there will be more cw activity on 630 m, I worked NO3M nr Erie ,PA so far and tried to work K4EJQ in TN with out success but did copy him FB.

I had a CW QSO back in 2007ish it should be in the LWCA archives I forgot his Ham call, It was a daytime CW QSO on 185ish kHz. It was a 50 mile distance his location in a bordering NW CT part of MA. I may have logged it but I would have to search. He has been inactive for quite a while. In the 1970s/80s there were quite a few local lowfers here in CT and I made lots of CW QSOs on 1750 meters.

GNK Good Sig. Into NC
Posted by Bill, K4JYS on October 31, 2017 at 20:41:57.

Just listened to GNK for a half hour or so. Time from around 1955Z to 2027Z. Sigs ranged from about RST 229 to around 549 on QSB peaks. There was a weak digital sig about 1kc below, but other wise freq. was pretty clear. I was using the R-388/URR with a 160m off center fed hertz antenna.

U3S shipped today
Posted by Chuck, N1KGY on October 31, 2017 at 21:06:34.

Received email about an hour ago that my U3S kit has shipped from QRPLabs.
Had a very positive email exchange with Hans (the proprietor) when I asked about typical shipping times. He explained that they're seriously backlogged because they've received nearly 2000 orders in the last 90 days (mainly for their new QCX CW/WSPR HF kit), but he offered to expedite mine when I explained that I planned to put it on 630/2200 meters and already had an amp and antenna ready to go.

I've bought/built a lot of kits over the years, and so far QRPLabs is making "top of the list" for outstanding customer service. Will keep everyone posted.
