Subj: LF Beacon Loggings
Date: 99-11-28 18:34:19 EST
From: k1xt hotmail (bill thomas)
I had the opportunity to visit my favorite spot for LF listening in eastern
Illinois, just 20 miles west of Vincennes,In. The place is called Red Hills
Park on Rt. 50. The nearest powerline is at least 1/2 mile away.
On Friday evening at 22:20 GMT I copied BA at 599. Not hard as BA is just 20 miles
south of Red Hills. However, I also copied YHO at 449 at 22:25 GMT. I
visited the spot again on Saturday and again heard YHO at RST 339 at 22:28
GMT. But the real surprise was A3O coming in at solid QSO quality at 559
also at 22:28 GMT. BA was off the air at this time.
Equipment used was a
Sony 2010 with a switched capacitance audio filter in line (SCAF). Antenna
was a 200 foot long wire strung through the brush and tuned with 365pf cap
and inductor in parallel. The inductor is 25 turns of #28 on an Amidon 1
inch material 77 core. I then feed it into a homebrew pre-amp using an
MPF102. It works quite well and I prefer it over a loop. Unfortunately, I
heard nothing else, not even longwave out of Europe that I can usually hear
from there. 73.. Bill Thomas k1xt hotmail.com

From: Webmaster
Strangely enough, we do know of such a list, but unfortunately we don't have details to post yet.
First, of course, there
are the links to the Navaid database and Pierre Thomson's Canadian NDB
database in our LF Utilities page. These are regularly updated.
Naturally, it's also convenient to have a printed list. Ken Stryker's hasn't been updated since 1993,
so former LWCA loggings editor Bob Montgomery issued one last season. It's out of
print too, now.
This year, Monitoring Times LF editor Kevin Carey came out with a
beacon guide. We will place information about it on the Longwave Home Page as soon as we are able to decode the press release.

Your site and its links are fantastic! I have been on for over 2
hours. Although I found a whole bunch of very interesting stuff, I did
not find what I was looking for.
I have been a Long wave listener for a long time. I am in a great
location for low frequency reception and constantly log beacons. I also
do some world traveling and always take a radio and antenna along to
catch beacons. What I was looking for was a comprehensive list to
verify my findings both US and International. I have an old (October
1985) copy of Ken Stryker's "The Aero/Marine Beacon Guide" but I am
afraid that it is old enough to be out of date. Is there something like his guide available
either on disk or hard copy? I would be interested if such a
comprehensive list was available.
Thanks for any help and again my compliments on your great Website.
Sincerely,
Karl Ayer N9PXE

Hi! I'm new to VLF monitoring and was wondering if anyone had any plans
for an indoor
ferrite core loop or something to that effect which I can use indoors
for monitoring VLF. I
currently use an indoor random wire which is fine for HF, but useless at
VLF. Any help as
to a loop or small vertical would be greatly appreciated. I'm not
looking to DX, just pick up ANY VLF signals. Thanks in advance!

Subj: RE: Advice on receiver
Date: 11/17/99 10:50:10 AM Eastern Standard Time
From: lyle mlecmn (Lyle Koehler)
The Kenwood TS570 and Yaesu FT847 are both very good receivers. Like
nearly all solid-state receivers or transceivers, their performance
suffers on LF for a couple of reasons. Most rigs intentionally reduce
the sensitivity on the AM broadcast band and below, in order to reduce
problems with overloading and intermodulation. In addition, the 50-ohm
input impedance of a modern receiver is a very poor match to the high
impedance presented by a "long wire" of practical dimensions on LF.
Rather than buying a new receiver, I'd suggest an LF preamp or
up-converter, preferably with a remote-tuned loop antenna. There are
several preamp designs on my web page that can be built for a few bucks.
An IC-751A is used for most of my LF listening. It has fairly good
sensitivity when connected to a 50-ohm signal generator, but only the
strongest LowFERs can be heard on a long-wire antenna without a preamp.
With a tuned loop and high-gain preamp, the receiver really comes alive.
For BPSK reception, I use an IC-706, which is an absolute dog when
running "barefoot" below about 300 kHz. Just tuned to the frequency of
TEXAS a few minutes ago, at 9:30 local time, with the IC-706 connected
to my 8-foot loop and preamp. The COHERENT software almost immediately
started printing the "TEXAS AGGIE " identifier string. 950 miles on a 4
milliwatts ERP signal in the daytime. So there's hope for almost any
receiver!

Good copy on LowFER RB this morning; RST 469 at 1115 UTC. I'd heard
Bob's signal about a week ago through the static crashes, but couldn't
get a positive ID. TEXAS was very strong when it switched into CW mode
at 1130 UTC. Also heard YHO, A3O and the five local (within 100 miles)
LowFERs. No sign of OK today -- hope that's because Bill is in listening
mode rather than off the air for other reasons.

I was listening between 23:00z and 01:00z this afternoon from a fairly quiet
location 20 miles north of St. Louis and could only copy BA at rst 229
approximately 140 miles to the east. Conditions were poor as BA is usually
much stronger. Unfortunately, I heard no other lowfers from before of after
sunset. Equipment was a Sony 2010 and a three foot box loop with pre-amp.
Everything was battery powered and located in an open field. Conditions
seemed unusually poor.

Just a short note to let everyone know that JDH is transmiting on 184.500
KHZ from Central Georgia 24/7. Antenna current seems a bit down from last
year but I guess that is to be expected when you don't have time to perform
the necessary maintenance to the antenna system. I will try to
improve things here over the winter. I will be transmitting CW only. AS a side note, NC is
very readable here both day and night. Good work Dex!

Subj: LowFER reception

From: lyle mlecmn (Lyle Koehler)
This morning I was listening from a little before 1100 to just after
1130 UTC, about 2 hours before local sunrise. LF conditions were
surprisingly good for signals within 1000 miles. Surprising in that a
large area of thunderstorms was apparently located within a radius of
150 miles from me at the time. OK and TEXAS were solid copy on CW.
Although I didn't turn on the computer to copy their BPSK signals, they
were loud enough so that the signals could easily be identified as BPSK
(weak BPSK signals sound like a steady carrier if you can hear them at
all). Also heard were A3O, YHO and BA, plus "locals" RM, BRO, SAM and
BK. No sign of RH, but I found out later from Bruce that it was off the
air at the time. So far this season TEXAS, at about 950 miles, is the
most distant LowFER I've been able to hear.

I have copied ADX several times and got an approximte fix on it. Seems to be on a line 15 degrees - 195 degrees thru Pullman, MI. Several others have heard it too. If we could get more "fixes", perhaps the search would be narrowed down. Quite strong here.

From: pthomson bruderhof (Pierre Thomson)
On Saturday afternoon I finally got the RI lowfer beacon running at the
new location. Frequency is 184.320 KHz, 6 wpm (C)CW 24hr / 7days. The new tower seems to load nicely, though ground losses are still
higher than I would like. In the coming week I will increase the number
of radials (12 to 30) and possibly drive a few ground rods at a distance
from the tower. The motor-driven variometer coil is also working well.
Today I picked up the signal from 20 miles out using a short E-field
probe on the car. It was well above the noise there, so I have hopes
that it will be audible much further away.

I can't seem to find adx-373 on navaid, I'm sure of the call but the frequency could be off by a
couple kc. I've got it pretty strong so it's probably in the eastern us or
canada but I can't say for sure. If anybody knows what it is let me know.
I put up a 100' longwire today, it's just 10-15' feet off the ground but it seems to be doing good
this is my first real attempt this season to log ndb's and so far I've got about 30.
I also thought I heard uby-266 and oe-276, I'm not as sure about these but I thought I got the
calls right and they weren't in navaid.

down into the 170 to 180 KHz area. I am presently testing the beacon on
177.777 KHz CW keyed "NC" id. All reception reports will be
