DIR off the air
Posted by Jim W4JBM on December 01, 2009 at 14:18:53.

DIR is going to be off the air for a while. If anyone wants to set up a sked to listen for it, it's no trouble to turn it on for a couple of nights. But I've been doing more listening lately so I've been shutting it off and turning it on a couple of times a day.

"The ground mounted 12ft vertical is not the best for a 4 mw transmitter at 13mhz.Still , that is good report.. Thanks for the report. "

That's way better than my antenna though. K6FRC HiFer uses a 7 foot hamstick on the roof of a shipping container with about 4 mW input power.

Well tis the season and I am resuming operation of SJ on 186.850 kHz this weekend (12/5) QRSS2O except when listening or testing(CW 6wpm).
Anybody getting on 160 meters? I'll be there this winter..

Sal's 160 meter question made me check out the ARRL band plan for 160 meters. It seems 160 meters has a tiny sliver designated for experimental and beacons use. I wondered how many folks who have taken the time to erect a fairly large Lowfer antenna system have tried to use them as 160 meter beacon antenna. Seems like a perfect fit. Big antenna, big coil. Why not.

According to the ARRL there is an interest in beacon activity on 160 meters. And they have provided/suggested a tiny bit of spectrum there. Heck I'm intersted in playing around there. I've got the license and the copper in the air. Why not.

Lee: What frequency range did the ARRL suggest for a possible beacon operation ?? My 160 Windom is resonant at 1.842 MHz. I still have the 1.8432 MHz Epson Oscillator I was using before moving to the Watering hole. It wouldn't take much of anything to throw together an Osc. Buffer, and PA running 1 watt into a resonant antenna.

Should have looked first. 1.999 to 2.000 MHz proposed for beacon operation on 160 meters. 1000 Hz isn't a lot of space, and mixing CW, and QRSS in such a small segment will undoubtedly have stations all over the top of each other, especially in un-coordinated operations. Just an of the wall thought on the subject; if a gentlemens agreement could be arranged, this might work out great. 0 call areas operate from 1.999.000 to 1.999.099, 1 land from ""9.100 to ""9.199, 2 land from ""9.200 to ""9.299, 3 land from 9.300 to 9.399, and you can see the pattern. All call areas would have a 100 cycle wide slot, and if this is proposed for propagational beacons; what better way to know where the band is open to than to be able to tune the slots and see where you can hear the beacons. Just my un-solicited 2 cents worth of opinion. 73 all ::: Andy - Beacon " XR "

Sounds like a genius plan to me. I'm on board with that. I was just planning to use 3 or 5 wpm at a couple of watts and not bother with the QRSS/very slow modes. My initial thoughts on the subject didn't think crowding would be much of a problem. Granted 1000 hz does not give much elbo room to operate. I think there would be way more listners than beacon op's. Us beacon op's are a rare breed don't cha know. Just my 2 bits worth.

I think a good bit of the HiFer's operating are Epson programed Oscillators. Those can be ordered thru Digi-key. Paul KC6RFC put me on the proper one, he might chime in and or I will look up the instructions for it. The nice thing about the Epson's are that they are all self contained, add a few components between the Epson and antenna, feed them 5 volts and something to key it with and errect your antenna and you are all set.
You can also take a CB Ch 14 crystal and divide it by 2 to get there as well. I was going to use this method but when I saw the low parts count the Epson route offered I went that way.

While I am typing It appears that I will be helping another ham place a HiFer on the air. I have sent him an Epson on 13.561 MHZ and a PICAXE with code. He is going to put together and program it and get it on air around the first of the year. Location of this HiFer will be 150 miles east of SZX on 13.563 MHZ. Our goal is for the HiFer listeners to judge differences in what 150 miles offers. ID for the new HiFer has not been determined yet.

Also, I still have a complete 1-transistor HiFer transmitter board complete and working that someone here wanted, but never sent me their address for. I tried to get in touch with them a few times, no luck. So, I assume it is available once again. Yours for the cost of shipping, maybe three bucks tops. Currently on or near 13.560 MHz.

Live audio stream of SAQ frequency from KU4XR
Posted by Andy - KU4XR on December 08, 2009 at 10:09:49.

Greetings all: I will be streaming " LIVE " audio of 17.200 KHz during the
" SAQ " transmission on Dec. 10th at 08:00 UTC, and at 16:00 UTC. The audio feed will be coming directly from my computer using the sound card and WinRAD.
Due to sleeping, and work times; the audio feed will be up for quite a few hours, possibly beginning around 04:00 UTC on the 10th, and if the computer does not crash, will be up for almost 24 hours. I am 450 miles inland here in Tennessee ( EM75xr ) so reception of " SAQ " will be difficult, but possible.
Those who do not have VLF capabilities can connect and " HEAR " what I hear.
The IP address to connect to the audio feed is: http://97.89.42.135:8000
write it down, or copy, and paste it into your browser address window. When you are connected, click the " Listen " button at the top of the page. The feed will work best using WINAMP, or ITunes media players. The audio feed will be coming from my computer, NOT a commercial server, so only 20 people can connect.
This is the first time I will have tried such an endeavour, and I hope it works and that I can hear " SAQ " at my QTH. *** 73 all; from Andy - KU4XR

The EH beacon on 13557 KHz around 339, with more pronounced QSB effects at regular intervals. Both doing very well for such low power. None of the other beacons were heard. Ed EM50bk

SAQ
Posted by krystallo on December 10, 2009 at 14:53:44.

Hey All,
Did anyone copy the SAQ test this morning? Static crashes were vicious here and earlier in the day we actually had some rare December thunder and lightning. Also seemed that the propagation may not have been too good (at least to my QTH in Boston). In all the years of trying I have only had one useable copy and one ultra poor "possible" copy

I ran on my apt. 75 ft long wire ,a .063 H 21 bar ferrite load, a LF Engineers VLF amp and the LF Eng 80M upconverter.Lots of other new submarine stations copied,NAA and NLK and others RAGED in at big signal levels but not a hint of SAQ. I figured it was a long shot anyway. FWIW I DID get the Icom to respond down to 3 Kc which is a new record.

Defective Sangean ATS-803A / DX440 Deafness was Q110
Posted by Lee on December 13, 2009 at 12:15:20.

Defective Sangean ATS-803A / DX440 Deafness was FET Q110. Kudos to Andy XR for that tip. Note to everyone Q110 is being used for more than LW and MW. Since the radio was open I did all the mods. The fine tune mod, the static discharge diode mod, the tuning ecoder cable shield for noise reduction mod, and a mod that I came up with or possibly read about. I installed a 1/8th inch jack near the loopstick so I can plug in and use a external loopstick or loop ant. Pluging in the jack breaks the connection to the internal loopstick.

Hi Andy. Sure thing. I found it among all the other possible mods at one of the Sangean 803 sites. I don't have the site info at my fingteips but I can describe it. The encoder cable is a few inchs long and plugs into the display / digital board. This routing runs right under the RF front end. Not a good possition for an unshielded data cable. The mod entails putting a shield around the cable and grounding / drainig one end of the shield. Un plug the small kind of fragile connector from the digital board. This connector is keyed so be carefull when you plug it back in. Get a short piece of shield braid from a chunk of RG8. Slip the shield over the connector and possition it so can fold it back and tape the ends to make a neat shield. Solder a short piece of wire on the braid near the encoder end of the cable. Get a piece of shrink that will fit over the connector and slip it over the braid to cover ALL the braid. Heat shrink it. Carefull not to melt the radio, wire or burn yourself. Now solder the wire to a ground on the digital board somewhere near the encoder. Plug the connector back in. TaaDaa. Your Done. Good luck and have fun.

Hi Andy. The intent is to reduce digital noise generated by the radio during tuning using the tuning encoder. One of the complaints everyone has had about the radio is the self induced digi noise. I am sure most people have heard about the "anti-chuffing" mod. I have not done that one myself. The encoder shielding mod cuts down a lot on the self induced digi noise generated during tuning. I have noted a large reduction in tuning noise by the mod. On LW and MW and SW. And of course by using the "Lock" switch feature once you find a freq to listen to, "Lock" the radio and hear how quiet it gets by turning off the Proc.

Posted by Webmaster on December 17, 2009 at 18:24:18.

Here's a status report on our file copying problem of Wednesday night. Both the standard threaded message list and the chronological list were seriously damaged. While the messages themselves remained intact on the server, there was no way to view them. With all I.T. elves currently tied up at the North Pole, that means a human will have to re-create the message lists by hand...a very time consuming process. The following plan was devised to restore functionality of the message board as quickly as possible:

1. Re-create a few of the most recent message threads as a starting point. (Done Thursday afternoon.)
2. Restore the ability to post new messages and replies. (Done Thursday evening!)
3. Archive all the existing but currently unviewable posts up to the end of November, so they can be accessed through the Archives link and Message Board Search features. (Done late Thursday night, 18 hours ahead of schedule. A temporary partial archive was also create for December '09 to make some of the orphaned messages visible sooner.)
4. Re-establish links to all posts and threads from roughly the past two months or so. (Likely to be finished early next week.)

As noted above, you can reply and write new posts once more. There will be a few times over the next several days when posting will have to be turned off briefly for maintenance, but we will try to keep those interruptions as brief as possible.

This HiFer is located in Paxton, IL 35 miles north of Champaign. RIX is 139 air miles from SZX. It uses an Epson programable oscillator and a 08M PICAXE to hold the message.

It is hoped that if you hear RIX, try for SZX at 13.563 or the other way around.

Let the fun begin.

Paul, RIX is using a 20mtr mobile ant. modified to 13.561, mounted to the steel enclosure for the beacon. I am working on the PCB layout, but it is running on a bread board. Once on the PCB it will better loaded to the ant. It is solar powered and battery backed up. If you would like a pics send me an email with your address and I'll send you some.

SZX is using a 200'Delta loop. I may follow up and set the HiFer up similar to RIX with solar cell and mobile antenna. I need to visit a hamfest for some hardware first.

Lowfer beacon SIW QRV on 185.185 kHz QRSS30

Thanks to great cold temperature work by Bob, NK9M, a beacon signing
"SIW" in QRSS30 mode is now active from grid EN51uq on 185.185 kHz.
Also, thanks to Jay, W1VD for advice on how to match the antenna. I
mistakenly thought the capacitance offered was too low to tune; in fact,
it was too high. Transmissions may be intermittent for awhile as we
figure out how to keep the undersized battery charged. Eventually a
larger battery and solar panel will be obtained. Also, it's hoped to
move it to the 185.3 kHz watering hole when a synthesizer running off
the 10 MHz OCXO is completed.

Dear Friends:

I have filed a Petition for Rulemaking (currently PRM09ET) with the Federal Communications Commission seeking a secondary allocation to the amateur radio service on 135.7-137.8 kHz, in keeping with our international obligations after WRC-07. Whatever assistance you can give me to persuade the FCC to proceed on this matter would be greatly appreciated. In advance, thank you! I've posted the links below. For a blessed holiday season, I offer...

Hello to all.... Glad to here SJ is getting out. I've been tuning around on 1750m and checking the watering hole, I think I got a bit of MP,,, the receiver is not the most stable for very narrow bandwidths but is useable (FRR-21). I may try the converter and Yaesu next..

Evidently coil L/D does matter
Posted by Andy - XR on December 27, 2009 at 17:44:00.

Hi everyone:

After redoing my antenna in Nov. and adding more tophat, the
Inductance needed went down. I had planned to unwind some of
the fixed coil to bring the tuning back to the MAX Inductance
position on the Variometer. I kept putting it off, and since
I've started reading about coil L/D ratios, I saw that mine
was way out of proportion. I also read that the Variable coil
should add only a small amount of Inductance for peak
performance of the variometer. I had almost 1 Milli-Henry on
the vari-coil, and about 1.30 mH on the fixed coil ( bucket ).
I unwound the vari-coil to a value of 370 uH, and added the
windings to the paint bucket to a value of 2.14 mH.
The bucket / fixed winding is 10" diameter, and the Length of
the fixed coil is 2". If I uderstand the calculation right,
2/10 = .2 :: I think that is in the good range. Anyway, I
turned the beacon back on and re-tuned, and the changes
resulted in a 10 mAmp increase in RF current at 1 Watt.
I am now at 195 mAmps on a 200 mAmp meter. It has never been
this high before. I am definitely happy with the results
of todays work.
I am still trying to decide if putting a fixed coil in the
vertical radiator about 4' above the roof level of the trailer
might help to further reduce capacitive losses from the
verticals proximity to the aluminum siding of the trailer home.
It may be one of those; I'll just have to try it and see if it
helps or not.

Well 73 to everyone for now :::

Hi Roger,

I haven't been checking the long wave message board as often as I should so just noticed your reception report of SIW. Thank you very much. It's nice to know the beacon is getting out of the back yard, so to speak. Actually, it's located at a friend's QTH (Bob, NK9M, EN51uq) so I can continue monitoring myself. We just got it up before too much snow fell. No doubt there's lots of room for improvement but it's a start.

I've only copied your beacon once, on November 7 when it was also pounding into the grabber at http://www.cp.duluth.mn.us/~ki0le/pages/argo.htm.
I haven't seen it since, but the grabber has been down too. As I write this message the grabber seems to be back online but it's not receiving any signals. Is RM still QRV on 189.8 kHz, QRSS30?

Big round coil hanging in the air at - XR
Posted by Andy - XR on December 30, 2009 at 19:24:43.

Hi All:

In a hasty rush to try to beat the rain, and darkness, I managed
to quickly wind a center loading coil for the " XR " antenna.
I had about 1 hour of daylight, but got it up there. One thing
that I caught too late to change, ( dark, and now raining ), is
that I installed the coil Upside Down, meaning that the coil
windings are going in the oposite direction of the Variometer
windings. Past experience has shown this to " Buck " against any
existing Inductance. I may or may not have helped my signal by
doing that, but when it isn't raining, and I have daylight; I
will turn it over so all the windings are going in the same
direction. **** Some details ****

The loading coil is about 4 feet above the roofline of my
mobile home. My hope is to pull some extra current up the
vertical, and away from the side of the trailer. I hope it works.
I'm not sure how to take the meter readings I'm seeing now
on my TS450 meter, and my FS meter, as well as the RF current
meter. When I did my antenna project in Nov. I added 5 feet in
height, and extra top-hat wires. The RF current went up, but
the FS, and radio meters both dropped in reading. I'm sure they
are reading " Near Field Voltages " ( The radio only has a
4 foot coax jumper connected ), and as has been shown by captures
afterwards; the signal improved over the RF pathway. NOW; after
adding the coil, upside down though; The RF current has now
pegged the 200 mAmp meter scale, that's as high as she will read.
And same as before; the FS, and radio meters dropped even further.
I'm hopeing that's a good thing, and that more RF is actually
radiating from the top of the antenna.

My present measured readings are:

PA Volts = 27 vdc ; PA Current = 37 mAmps ; Power is .999 Watts
and the RF Current meter as stated is 200 mAmps

Loading Coil details:

Diameter = 6.5" ; Winding length = 4" ; Turns = 26 with #10 AWG
stranded insulated wire ; Coil Inductance = 88 uH ;
Resistance = 1.1 Ohm ; unable to measure the distributed
Capacitance on my LCR meter.
Coil form = A red plastic Folgers coffee can ( coffee enjoyed )

I'll see how it does for a few days with the Loading Coil as I
consider it , " Upside down " , then I'll turn it over and see
what happens then. ** Lots of cut and try at LF **

73 for noe all; and HNY to you also :::
