Agree John. We had aurora here north of Boston but light pollution obscured it dramatically at out QTH. However, “rural” friends 5 miles away had a real treat at 3 AM. Pretty striking how dramatically the solar storm killed HF propagation the last 2 nights, too. My CQs on 20, 40 and 60 meters around 0030Z returned essentially zero RBN spots if I ignore 2 local spotters less than 15 miles away. Can’t remember when I’ve ever seen so few RBN returns. Finally got a QSO on 80 meters with a ham about 12 miles away, he was weak and had that odd “DX flutter sound.” I did also give a listen to VLF/LW 2 nights ago. As expected, nothing above 200 kHz except hyperlocal MJ (209 kHz), but oddly below 100 kHz things seemed rather normal, I heard WWVB fine on 60 kHz, the usual submariners (including ND) around 20-27 kHz, and at least one EU FSK station (FUE? FUG? sorry just memory, didn’t write anything down). Just curious if it’s known if solar storms have lower impacts on VLF? Sure seemed that way to me.
