Hi Bruce,

As Ray said, there is quite a bit of digital mode activity on 630m and some on 2200m, though not nearly as much on either band as there was when I left in early 2021. I think high solar activity has made conditions poor for one thing, but the newness of these bands for hams here in the U.S. might have worn off to a degree also?

I'm with you in principle. I much prefer the old ear and brain modes and was a hold out against digital for a long time. However, due to the tremendous advantage of digital modes in utilizing weaker signals and covering longer distances, that is mostly what is used on these bands. There are still some use of visual modes such as QRSS and its variant DFCW on 2200 meters. I did see and hear some normal CW activity on 630m a couple mornings ago. I had a few CW QSOs on both bands back in 2019 through early 2021 but I had some problems equipment-wise doing it. It is actually cheaper and easier to set up for digital modes on these bands than for CW or SSB. I suppose the biggest attraction of these bands for me is the building and experimenting that can so easily and often affordably be done at these frequencies. I have five LF and MF construction projects going on the bench right now, with more to come!

Paul
