LW was interesting as a kid (in the UK), as there were only two stations broadcasting in English (BBC on 198kHz and one of the various Irish broadcasters that occupied 252kHz over the years). Otherwise there were languages galore, and depending on your radio's tuning, one could hear flutters of LORAN or bleeps and bloops of the Decca systems for navigation.

NDBs were a mystery although there used to be a curious imposter in the medium wave broadcast band, LIC on 545kHz. LIC, Lichfield, in central England.
