WD4NGG and AA4RM went on a Dxpedition to Hunting Island State Park, near Beaufort, SC. Beautiful location far away from power lines! SAQ heard RST 249 - 269 @12:15-12:37 UTC. QRN levels running S6-S9 not too bad for a July summer morning on South Carolina Coast. Receiver FRG-100, antenna Hagan Ferrite Loop with converter. 73 WD4NGG Todd.

As posted, I had no luck inland near Atlanta, but odd that you were near Beaufort, as after I gave up on the 0430 EDT SAQ transmission, I TV DXed, and saw, of all things, a real test pattern (rare these days) from WJWJ-TV channel 16 in Beaufort.
Nice work on the great catch!

I received as well the transmission of SAQ on July 2nd, 2006 8.30 UTC and the transmission of 12:30 UTC successfully.

I was not able to receive the transmissions of SAQ in May and June 2006, because of a noise signal, which disabled all reception trials!

MRHS Night of Nights VII, 12 July
Posted by Webmaster on July 12, 2006 at 19:45:31.

Here are details of tonight's scheduled operation:

HISTORIC MORSE CODE RADIO STATION KPH
RETURNS TO THE AIR FOR "NIGHT OF NIGHTS VII"

Former RCA Station KPH Celebrates Its 101st Anniversary

Coast Station KSM Celebrates Its 1st Anniversary

Coast Stations WLO, KLB, NMC and NOJ To Be On The Air

New Frequencies for KSM, KLB and NOJ

------------

In the seventh annual event that has become known as the "Night of
Nights", historic Morse code radio station KPH will return to the air
in commemoration of the last commercial Morse message sent in the
United States.

Frequencies and reception report information for all stations appear
below.

KPH, the ex-RCA coast station located north of San Francisco, will
return to the air for commemorative broadcasts on 12 July at 1701 PDT
(13 July at 0001 GMT), 7 years and one minute after the last
commercial Morse transmission in the US. These on-the-air events are
intended to honor the men and women who followed the radiotelegraph
trade on ships and at coast stations around the world and made it one
of honor and skill.

Transmissions are expected to continue until at least midnight PDT
(0700GMT).

Veteran Morse operators, including former KPH staff members, will be
on duty at the receiving station at Point Reyes, CA listening for
calls from ships and sending messages just as they did for so many
years before Morse operations were shut down.

The transmitters are located 18 miles south of Point Reyes in
Bolinas, CA at the transmitting station established in 1913 by the
American Marconi Co. The original KPH transmitters, receivers and
antennas will be used to activate frequencies in all the commercial
maritime HF bands and on MF as well.

Many of the KPH transmitters will be 50s vintage RCA sets. KSM will use
a 1940s vintage Press Wireless PW-15 transmitter will be on its 12Mc
frequency. Power output will be 4 to 5kW. The transmitting antennas
include a Marconi T for MF, double extended Zepps for 4, 6 and 8Mc
and H over 2s for 12, 16 and 22Mc.

KPH will send traffic lists, weather and press broadcasts as well as
special commemorative messages, some of which will be sent by hand.
At other times the KPH and KSM "wheel" will be sent to mark the
transmitting frequencies.

Members of the public are invited to visit the receiving station for
this event. The station will be open to visitors beginning at
1500PDT (3:00pm). The station is located at 17400 Sir Francis Drake
Boulevard and is on the route to the Point Reyes lighthouse. Watch
for a cypress lined driveway on the right about a mile past the entry
to Coast Guard station NMC.

KPH is operated by the Maritime Radio Historical Society in
cooperation with the Point Reyes National Seashore, part of the
National Park Service.

In reply to Voice on 160-190KHz posted by Ed N0UOR on July 19, 2006

Ed,

Most of it in recent years has been on the west coast. Ed Gelinas has been running the KLFB AM beacon from Sunnyvale, CA. Dave Curry and others have done some SSB work, mostly local, though Dave now has an Experimental license for higher power.

LF Voice work is entirely practical, but for Part 15 operation in the 160-190 kHz band, your range will be limited. The reports you may see of Lowfer receptions at hundreds or thousands of miles are mostly based on DSP techniques with very low data rates. With a carefully designed transmitting antenna and low noise conditions at the receiving end, distances of a few hundred miles are possible with conventional-speed CW. But your range with SSB and typical antennas will be much less. The limitations on AM are worse, of course.

You can have a lot of fun on a local basis, though, if you have someone else with similar interests.

New utility LF site soon operational in Europe
Posted by Trond Jacobsen on July 22, 2006 at 09:13:01.

Hello group

The German EFR, Europäische Funk-Rundsteuerung, company is soon to
start transmisions from their new site in Hungary. The antenna to be used
is believed to be a convential LF antenna (converted mw bcast
facility?) south of the historic 314 m (1031 feet) tall Blaw-Knox antenna at
Lakihegy in the Pest Megye region near Budapest.

The EFR antenna is located at 47.366N 19.016E, it is 280 meter tall
and the power is quoted as 100 kw making the site comparable to their
site at Mainflingen in erp. The operationl frequency from their new
Hungarian transmitter fascility is believed to be 135.6 kHz.

More details and coverage predictions to be found at EFR's homepage.

Although I'm ultimately interested in highly concentrated, directional traffic in the 1720 meter band, I will happily settle for now, for ANY help finding a simple discreet, even tube component receiver circuit for that range, You know, it would seem fun, to just listen between 160 and 190 Kc for a while, before 'say for example', tring to do at least CW there. The whole concept, seems fascinatingly intriguing! The more I consider it, the more I want to do it. I've thoroughly enjoyed doing much sillier things. I'd be grateful for a simple, non I.C circuit I could build, from junk-box stuff. Thanks folks!

John,

1. Do you have an HF receiver? Any info on your receiving equipment would help.

2. By "non I.C. circuit" are you restricting this just to tubes, or are discrete transistors OK?

3. Do you have any budget to go shopping on eBay, or do you need to stick with the junkbox?

Posted by Clive Carver GW4EYO on July 24, 2006 at 18:15:59.

A few years ago, before Criggion was demolished, I drove along the public road under the aerial. Besides the main VLF aerial and it's feeder, you could make out another aerial with a seperate feeder going to another building.

Whereas the main aerial was VLF, I guess the other one was LF.

Does anyone have any details: frequency/callsign of the LF service?

Also, I understand that the VLF service was GBZ however different books give different frequencies. Does anyone have a definitive answer please.

Their replacements I believe are Anthorn and Skelton(?) Does anyone know their callsigns and frequencies?

Thanks.

RAK 7 Speaker and other Questions
Posted by Novice on July 27, 2006 at 04:13:13.

Hi,
I have an Andrea RAK 7 receiver(with PSU) here that I am cleaning up and want to test out.
I was told that the Earphones(the only place to hook-up to for sound)connection has an output of 600 ohms.
Can anybody tell me if this is correct?
I have an old speaker hear that is in a cabinet that closely matches the style of this receiver that I would like to use but it isn't anywhere close to 600 ohms.
Is there a way to make this speaker work? I'm short on founds so I cant buy a matching transformer right now.
And lastly I need to make up a simple yet good antenna for this radio...any suggestions?
A loop maybe?

Also if anybody would by chance happen to know of a site I could download a manual(not sure how to work the controls)and a schematic for this receiver could you please let me know?

Thank you

This is my first VLF receiver and I am very anxious to see what I can hear.

Hi,
Congratulations on your RAK-7! As far as an output transformer, in a pinch you could use a 120V to 12V power transformer, just hook the 600 ohm audio from the RAK-7 to the 120V primary and the 8 ohm speaker (or headphones) to the 12V side. I don't know of any free or downloadable manuals, but there are several sources that will sell them. Lots of antenna ideas on Rik Strobbe's page:

Hi Warren,
Thanks...
I just happen to have a bunch of dual 115v/230v 8 pin transformers that put out 12v @ 500mA in parallel and 24V @ 250mA in series.
Here's a link to the transformers I am talking about...they are the SPW-504-D ones

http://premmagnetics.reachlocal.com/coupon/?scid=107592&cid=27575&tc=06072801051974261&kw=1172863&dynamic_proxy=0&primary_serv=premmagnetics

I'm still learning about transformers...but believe this is what you are talking about?
Not really sure how I would go about this?
I have heard that if the impedance doesn't match that you can mess up the circuit in the receiver and/or have really poor volume.
Is there anyway I can check to be sure?

Thanks for the link to Rik Strobbe's page.
I had wanted to build an E-probe put at this time need to put that off and build something simple as I cant send for the transistors and chokes right now.

I appreciate the help
Thank you

In reply to Re: RAK 7 Speaker and other Questions posted by Novice on July 28, 2006

Hi,
You can't hurt the radio if you have the wrong impedance, you just won't get full volume.
I looked at the data sheet for your transformer. It has two 120V primaries and two 12V secondaries. You would want to connect the primaries in parallel also connect the secondaries in parallel. To do this make the following pin connections Primary strap pins 1-3 together, and 2-4 together; Secondary connect 5-7 together, and 6-8 together.
Connect the receiver output to the primary pins 1&4, connect your speaker or headphones to pins 5&8.

Let me know how you make out with this.

Hi Clive, I think two places you may find information on Criggion (GBZ and others)are Radio Bygones , and Practical Wireless. I certainly remember an article in PW, but I am not sure whether they have a searchable archive. Radio bygones does for mags post 1999 http://www.radiobygones.co.uk/ I think you can buy individual copies on-line. They have also had several articles on other stations like Caernavon, Hull and Dorchester. There is some Rugby GBR information on my web site wwww.alan.melia.btinterent.co.uk

PW are usually helpful and can supply back issues and copies of articles I believe.

Hi Warren,
Thanks for clearing up my misunderstanding on the impedance mismatch.
And Thank you for showing me what pins to strap together on the transformer.
I'm very anxious to try this out and to see what I can hear on VLF...
I am going to install the transformer into the speaker tomorrow hopefully and get everything wired up.
Then I need to pick out an antenna to build. I have been reading through the link you gave me but haven't settled on one yet.

I will post back on how everything works out.

I appreciate your help
Thank you
