Hello all from rural VA from Guy N1GMM;I am an older (68+) ham with a homebrew, qrp,cw only background. I will try to keep first post shorter. First, thanks to all and Kevin for help with the membership. I am hoping to post often, mostly technical. I am starting to listen and maybe transmit on the lower bands in that order. I am recovering from 2 right cerebral strokes (3 years now). So far, I can walk with a cane and even use a sling shot to shoot lines as high as I can. I have put up a doublet 240ft/65ft high, ladder line. And I have a 132ft EFHW ant up as well. My CW skills flew the coop after strokes but they are slowly coming back. I can still fix radios for others and make qrp rigs for others most any solidstate kind. K2's are fun as well as others.
So, I want to listen low for now as I have nothing but time. I have a modified R75 with tight filters (100hz collins in 455 slot, 500hz in 9mhz slot). I have build preamps for a vertical ant up a tree (lots here). Waiting on RG-6 cable. Never worked with F connectors either. This will be fun!
Question: I do get some BCB interferance here which creates IMD. I am playing with some cheshybev 5th order filters but the shape is too wide. Filters are fun, but complicated and one needs a large supply of torroids, caps and wire. I have some. and some test equipment. What do people use here? LP filter, Stop Filter or better yet a tunable preselector for lf use? I would rather build something flexible and even tunable.
I am enjoying the newsletters Kevin sent to me. I am figuring what to ask for next.
Any website info is appreciated. I would be glad to help others too in anyway I can. But.. I am an utter newbie in this LF and VLF areas. But I like to learn and it helps keep my brain cells working.
Sorry for terse writing.. works best now with me with my health. I can do most things (provided wife is not looking) outside.. although it takes me a week or more to hang antennas and put in wood for the winter, I am active, no TV here and I read, I have a semiconductor,IT background for years. I have made some aquaintances of people on line (AA7U, VE3PSZ) who have been a great help. Thanks for listening and for any recommendations.
